Question about Illegal firearms - any LEO's wanna chime in?

Post by age_ranger »

Ok, I've got a question. I got a call about a friend of a friend of a friend....
Anyway, long story short, he owns a business and one of his workers had a Sig225 in his posession and it had the serial numbers filed off. It was in one of his work trucks so he confiscated it. Now comes the tricky part.

This guy is a convicted felon (the business owner) and is now in posession of a "street gun". My advice was to turn it in to the police. Then, after thinking about it, I told them to strip it and give the police the frame. ;-)
....and give me the parts. LOL. Seriously though. As a convicted felon, he can't have this in his posession, so would he face charges by bringing it to turn in?

I know he'll do the right thing and he wants to take care of it asap. Just wants some reassurance that he's not going to get jacked up doing so.

Have him take somebody with him and have them turn it in.

It is a felony for anyone to be in possession of the firearm with the serial number altered, and he would be in even bigger trouble than the average person if caught with it.

He could call the police and turn it in, and not get in any trouble, IF the employee he took it from is identified and admits that the boss took it from him. Don't trust the employee to be that stupid (or the boss may not be telling the truth about that part since I don't see too many employees letting the boss take the gun like that - my suspicious police nature I guess).

I think his best bet is to call the police and turn it in, tell them who he got it from, and hope for the best. If there is another employee or witness who could verify the story, it would help. The longer he has it, the more chance he takes on someone dropping a dime on him or his making a dumb mistake and getting caught with it. Cooperating like this is his best bet to avoid trouble.

UPDATE: I was told he called the local PD and explained his predicament. The local PD was very cooperative and understanding and the turn in ewnt well. Wish I could have gotten some more details. Glad it turned out well for the guy, but I bet it stressed him out a bit. Maybe this will help him gain a little more respect for our hard working LEO's.
