Each debate gets him Viral Videos and free airtime on Letterman, conserving campaign funds ... I wouldn't put it past him if he was doing things on purpose for extra free publicity. smart budgeting

That was humor, right?
Hard to imagine that anyone on the planet would seriously think he's stepping on his own tongue, reinforcing his Texas Redneck stereotype to save money and generate free publicity. Generally a Presidential candidate might want to generate more "positive" buzz in the media. If he IS doing this, it would be proof positive that he's not the man for the job.

At least Perry isn't competing with Penn State staff for the most accusations of sexual impropriety.

March is a long ways away, people forget details but getting your name out there is important prior to the GOP Primary

I recall a guy who was elected Mayor or Governor on name recognition after lots of publicity of him facing criminal charges the prior year. Cain's money came in faster after accusations publicity...

I think it's smart to save the budget for Obama, not waste it now. People are already forgetting why the last debate's video went viral ... Mitt and him pointing at each other or something ...

This isn't Perry's first Rodeo ;-) I think he knows what he's doing.

Whether out-of-Staters buy it or not, whether it works or not ...is another matter.

He's got my vote.

Works for me, but aim at "so-called Palestine" first ... sights musta been off, lemme try again ...

That was Edwin Edwards, a multi-term Governor of Louisiana...in the Huey P. Long mold. He had been governor, then got defeated by a reform candidate after charges of widespread corruption and bribery in state highway and construction projects were brought against him. The new governor was unable to get anything done, and the economy really took a hit.

Edwards ran against him the next election, with the campaign slogan "I'm Edwin Edwards and I'd rather be CORRUPT than INCOMPETENT"...they had bumper stickers all over that just said "better CORRUPT than INEPT". He won by a huge margin. He got nailed again after that term for tax evasion and illegal campaign contributions related to high roller gambling junkets he hosted to Las Vegas for his big donors which included lots of girls, booze and dope...quite a character.

It has been said that a week in politics is a lifetime to you and I. It amazes me how many smart, educated people vote only because of name recognition. I believe that is part of the structual problems we face today. We need to get back to basics and vote for and elect indivuals based on history, performance, accountability etc...

There, my two cents worth. :txflag:

Listening to some of the interviews that were conducted with the voters after the last election completely dispelled this possibility for me. For example, Howard Stern conducted a series of interviews where he attributed all of John McCain's positions to President Obama and the voters still wanted to vote for BO.

Besides, if there is any possibility of the voters actually doing this, ACORN by whatever name it has been reconstituted, will simply create different voters.

I watched the clip of the Letterman show. Rick Perry doesn't have much of a sense of comedic timing. Then again, he was funnier that Letterman has been. I'd personally rather have a forgetful President who was willing to make fun of himself than......(fill in the blank, there are many options to choose from)

I'd agree with the "better corrupt than inept" mantra, but would not vote for either.

What was on the Top Ten list?
I believe the basic political division in this country is not between liberals and conservatives but between those who believe that they should have a say in the personal lives of strangers and those who do not.

Many presidents were elected after worse "gaffes" include Gerald Ford ... and numerous ones made by Obama as he toured the 57 States campaigning.

It's a way to keep in the news without women accusing a candidate of stuff ... "gaffes" = free publicity, which historically doesn't hurt a campaign at all

A big difference between Edwards and other politicians was that Edwards never denied any wrongdoing...just said as long as he got the job done people wouldn't care. His record pretty well bears that out...he was elected 4 times...twice after being voted out after his first corruption trial. After his opponents first term, Edwards ran again and said "He's so slow it takes him an hour and a half to watch 60 Minutes, if we don't hurry up and get him out of there, there won't be anything left to steal". Later in his 4th term, he was indicted on federal racketeering charges related to his ties to the gambling industry and casino licensing and wound up spending about 10 years in federal prison...just got released this year. He and two of his cronies bought a ranch a few miles out of town here back in the early 80's, and would fly in with a bunch of friends on weekends for big skeet, trap, and live pigeon shoots with some nationally ranked shooters and lots of high stakes betting on the matches. He was an unrepentant crooked politician, but he did throw a heckuva party and everbody had alot of fun. I think the only shooting Barry ever did was with a needle. ;-)

I keep thinking about this one and wondering how the left reconciles that gaffe with this one from Perry. Perry forgot one department that he wants to get rid of, yet Obama claimed to have been to 57 states and only had one left to visit. He actually thought there were 58 states. Maybe that's what they were taught down there in Indonesia or where ever it was he went to elementary school. I still would have thought he'd have figured out there were only 50 states at some point in Harvard. However, if one can make a gaffe on such a basic thing as how many states there are it would seem like someone could say just about anything and get elected president.
