AR question

Thinking about getting a rifle on the AR platform built for me. I need suggestions.

I want long range, accuracy and knock down. Recoil and price no problem.

I don’t know much about the AR. At the risk of showing my ignorance, could an AR be built .308 & 20” barrel? If so what would the resulting characteristics be?

If you want a 308 look at the Larue OBR.
Maybe not the best starter gun though.

For a first AR I'd suggest a 5.56 version. They are much more plentiful and cheap. You can get a nice free-floated rifle with a stainless varmint barrel for not too much. I have a RRA that came with a great 2 stage trigger that's quite accurate.

There are plenty of AR pattern rifles in .308, my recommendation would be to get one that uses the DPMS magazines as those tend to be available everywhere. As for the 20 inch barrel, that might prove a little more difficult but is doable (might need to be ordered). If you not locked into an AR pattern rifle and want a very accurate semi-auto .308 with a 20 inch barrel I would suggest considering an FNH USA FNAR.

If price is not a concern and accuracy is a priority I would go with the Knight's Armament SR-25. I run a 24" heavy crowned DPMS for long range semi-auto precision, but that joker is HEA-VEE! I will probably get it cut down to 20" in the future. The SR-25 is on my gun "bucket list" though.

Thanks for the suggestions. This would be my first semi-auto but not my first rifle. I had a Winchester .30-30 Lever Action that was a great “brush gun” and a .45 cal muzzle loading Kentucky Rifle that was a lot of fun.

I will look at all the suggestions very close.

If price is no concern I would second the LaRue OBR. It's focus is accuracy and gives a guarantee on it.

Agree with LaRue and POF. I've heard lots and lots of good things about them and I really can't recall anything bad.

If you're not stuck on the AR platform, the FNAR is supposed to be one heck of a performer. It's heavy, a bit complex, and the mags are expensive, but it's a shooter right out of the box from what I hear.
