That said, with either lots of luck, or a small investment with a reputable gunsmith, they can be made serviceable. After speaking w Teddy Jacobson, my lingering issue with the 3" 1911 pattern guns is the underwhelming muzzle velocity with 230gr ammo. Teddy suggested using less than a 200gr bullet to get the speed up.

Because of this, I would prefer a bobbed commander or a CCO patterned gun.
It is true that a 3" barrel takes some of the stank off of a 230 grain bullet, although I wouldn't go so far as to call it "underwhelming." The .45 ACP cartridge isn't a high velocity round to begin with. Your load which might generate 850-875 fps in a 5" barrel is going to generate velocities around 775-800 fps in a 3" barrel; but just like I used to say about the .380 ACP cartridge of which I am completely unimpressed, I'm still not going to volunteer to step in front of one.

Corbon actually has a load specifically developed for 3" barreled .45s, and it is in their DPX line. Unlike a lot of the Corbon line, this is a standard pressure load, and it throws a 165 grain bullet at 1050 fps. THIS TESTER actually tested the load in a 5", a 4", and a 3" 1911 using a chronograph placed 10 feet out from the muzzle, and obtained the following results with that load:
  • Colt Defender/3" barrel: 1082 fps (415.84 ft-lbs)
  • Colt Commander/4.25" barrel: 1178 fps (492.90 ft-lbs)
  • Dan Wesson Patriot/5" barrel: 1217 fps (526.08 ft-lbs)
In the 3" pistol, when fired into water at 15 yards, the bullet produced 0.81" of expansion. The DPX bullets are solid copper which eliminates the possibility of jacket separation.

Short barreled pistols are a fact of life for most people who carry a gun, dictated by the simple exigencies of trying to conceal a gun. Some carry a full sized pistol, and I do that occasionally myself (either a 5" 1911 or a M&P45), but I carry my 3" 1911 more than I do the full sized guns. My other two carry pistols are both short barreled guns: a Kahr PM9 (3" barrel) and a M&P340 (1-7/8" barrel). I have found loads for those two pistols that account for their short barrel length and still produce sufficient velocity/energy.

In the PM9, I carry the Corbon 115 grain +P DPX.......the 9mm version of the DPX load tested above. Corbon advertises 1250 fps/399 ft-lbs from a 4" barrel. If you knock 100 fps off of that for the 1" loss of barrel length, you are still talking about 1150 fps—not exactly something to sneeze at—and the PM9 uses polygonal rifling which generally yields slightly higher velocities than standard rifling. In any case, the DPX seems like a very good choice for short barreled semi-autos.

In my M&P340, I carry the Hornady Critical Defense 125 grain .357 load. I actually telephoned Hornady and asked what kind of velocity they got out of 2" barrels using this load. They told me "1200 fps," which would produce about 400 ft-lbs.

My point of all of this is that you don't have to be "under-armed" with a short barreled pistol. I've been carrying the 230 grain loads in my 3" 1911 simply because that is what I have on hand for my full sized .45s. The gun functions flawlessly, as I mentioned in my previous post. I don't feel under-armed, but I would be a liar if I said that I not concerned about velocities for 230 grain bullets in that gun. I have been intending to buy some Corbon 160 grain DPX loads to test for function in that pistol, and if they function well, then I will likely start carrying that load in my Kimber.

Now, all of that said, I agree with gigag04 that the 4" 1911 is probably the best 1911 for carry, combining the best of both worlds.....easy concealability with sufficient barrel length. Let it also be known that gigag04 has expensive tastes. I'd love a bobbed commander, but the extra cost of that feature tends to put such out of my price range. However, there are other options also, such as the Kimber Compact models, which are 4" barreled 1911s with the shorter grip length of the officer-sized frames without paying the premium for a bobbed frame. All of that is moot for me right now though, as I can't afford to buy either of them.

Concealability differences between a 4" and 5" 1911 depend on how you carry. If you carry IWB then there is no real difference. If you carry OWB then the 4" will be slightly easier to conceal. The real advantage of a 3.5" or 3" 1911 is the length of the grip. The shorter grip is easier to conceal. The carry guns in my 1911 stable that have the best history of reliability are a 5" Kimber and a Rock Island Armory 3.5". I carry a alloy framed 4" 1911 daily because of its weight and the fact it has been utterly reliable since coming back from the smith.

As Giga said, Velocity is the Key factor when you get into the short barrelled guns. The .45 ACP is already a slow mover and is typically below 1000FPS for 230 grain loads. I have done some Chronograph testing with different .45 Autos and can say that there are other factors that can have as much of a difference on velocity as barrel length, however smaller is going to be slower so choose faster ammo for those guns.

If I could build the ideal concealed carry 1911 it would have a grip length like a 3" or 3.5" gun, it would have a 4" or 4.25" slide/barrel. Beavertail grip safety, no extended controls, and no fancy junk. CT laser grips would be an option and night sights would be mandatory. Grips would also be Ivory (There is a reason and its not making it look good).

Seabear my wifes gun is the Kimber Ultra CDP II and mine is the Ultra Carry II same as Tam's. She regularly puts one to three hundred rounds thru it in a session with her only gripe being I don't load mags fast enough. She prefers the shorter grip and 3" bbl over the fullsize guns and grips. We recently were at a range where two twenty something guys were in the lane next to her when she brought out the 3" bbl Kimber with the purple grips and laid it on the bench. One poked the other and they were laughing at the old lady with the cute little gun(did not know I was behind them).

They were shooting at 3yds and she set her target at 15 yds. When shooting resumed she put 8 in the 10 ring, dropped the mag and added 7 more seven to them. One of them said to the other we should quit laughing she shoots better than we do with that cute little gun. The 3'' bbl is as accurate as you are if you can shoot at all, and she says that the .45acp to her has less recoil than 9mm or .40 s&w.

While she loves her Kimber she is finishing out specs on a 4" Fusion in 357sig bobtail and it is a lot snappier than the .45acp. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the 3" Kimbers. I know some people have had problems with them but she has well over 4 thousand rounds thru hers and nary a hiccup. If she would get on this forum she would reccommend it. She carries hers with Powerball ammo in it.

I've seen that statement about 3" 1911's being unreliable before but, based on my own experience, I'm not buying it.

My Ultra CDP had a few hiccups at first, mostly attributable to a 1911 n00b learning how to properly lubricate it. I was having the exact same problems with my 5" RIA at the same time.

When I started testing it with hollowpoints (Winchester PDX1), it began locking the slide before the mag was empty. Just like TAM, a phone call to Kimber got me a new slide stop which solved the problem. Fast forward about a year and I went through the same scenario with a 5" Kimber which was locking open with FMJ. Which one of those two Kimbers was "inherently less stable" in your estimation?

Thanks for all the replies and great information.

I had already thought about the velocity differences and assumed I would buy ammo to accomdate proper speed and exspansion.

I was hung up for a while thinking about going with the 4" but I just didn't think I could do anything with the 4" I couldn't do with the 5" as far as concealment. My favorite for good concealment is a cross breed supertuck or similar rig. I have one for my PT111 as well as an imitation from Galco for my 1911 which can be used for 4" or 5". With the 5" in an IWB like this, I feel like the muzzle (signature or print) is just too much and too far down. When I say it is too far down or deep here is the issue. I like 4 o'clock right side. I also carry my wallet in my right rear pocket. So...the wallet always pushes up against the muzzle and the muzzle prevents me from pulling our my wallet. I know, I could switch pockets, but I'm not going to after all these years of building muscle memory.LOL

TAM, the Ultra stainless is what I have been looking at. I don't want another black anodized aluminum frame, I had that on my CDPII and it was a nightmare. Seemed like I got a new scratch every time I fired it. How does the satin silver finish hold up on the frame ? I know it is a tool, I just don't want it to look like I drug behind the truck.

I'm chasing after a couple used ones here locally. One guy won't go below $775, I'd like to get it at $700 or lower. I can get one from my favorite LGS for $825 new they also have a used one they want $725 for. I need to find someone that needs Christmas money. LOL

Have any of you 3" carriers ever shot off the Federal Hydroshock 168gr rounds and compared them to 230's? Is there a noticeable reduction in recoil? I have a 23oz carry weapon, and the 230's tend to beat up my hand a touch.

Well, mine has a few "self-inflicted" scratches which are of no concern to me as I'm never going to sell the gun. One of those scratches is a very slight "idiot mark" in the usual place. The other is from a mistake I made in choice of ambidextrous safety to have put on it. I chose the one pictured below. Instead of having a tang on the right side which extends under the right grip panel, this one has a pin with a retaining slot in the end of it which protrudes a small amount from the side of the frame. A flange on the right side safety lever rides in that slot, which retains the safety from coming loose and backing out of the frame.....which can happen with the other type of safety. However, the side of the safety lever which is contact with the frame ended up scratching the finish.

Image

This is a detail enlargement from another photo, and of poor resolution. I ran it though a couple of Topaz filters in PhotoShop to smooth it out and make the scratches more apparent. As you can see, the forward edge of the safety lever is captured by the slot in the protruding pin. The scratches are visible below the bottom edge of the lever.

Other than those two things the finish has held up well. There are no wear marks or anything like that, and the marks that I put on the gun are not really dramatically visible unless you're looking for them. However, they would definitely devalue the gun if I were to sell it.

I'll also fall into the category of those who don't buy into all the hype and fears about a 3 inch 1911 not being as reliable or shooting as good as their big brother counterparts. I currently have 6 Kimber Ultra models and the five that I have had to the range all run perfectly and shoot just as good as I can. The sixth one (Super Ultra Carry II) is a Christmas gift and I have not shot it yet.

Below are my Utra + CDP II, Super Carry Ultra HD (the Christmas present I have not shot yet), Stainless Ultra TLE II, Stainless Ultra Raptor II, Stainless Ultra Carry II, and Tactical Ultra II.

Image

Wth the exception of the Super Carry Ultra HD, they all get rotated in and out of carry and range time.

When I hear reports of how hard it is to shoot a 3 inch 1911 accurately, I scratch my head because I have never experienced those things with any of my 3 inch 1911's. Here is a target from my last range visit with the Stainless Ultra Carry II and the Tactical Ultra II:

Image

This is 2 magazines from the Tactical Ultra II into the center mass area
and 2 magazines from the Stainless Ultra Carry II into the head area.

No FTF's, no FTE's, no problems whatsoever with WWB FMJ ammo. This target was hanging at the15 yard marker and I was shooting as fast as I could squeeze the trigger. This was not a totally still target, the range had their air conditioner going and there is a vent over the target area at 15 yards that caused the paper to swing back and forth slightly.

Thanks TAM . Like I figured , it looks like the scratches wouldn't "jump or pop" like they do on the black. If I get one without an ambi safety, I doubt I would put one on. I used to think I had to have one, so all my 1911s do. I have come to realize though with carrying them or shooting them in Steel Challenge, they cause more trouble than they are worth and in rapid draw they are even painful.

How'd those prices sound to you? We don't get many down here.

Dang Dave, sweet collection and awesome shooting. Looks more like most people can do at 15 feet not yards. Good job! You are making me want one even more now, :hurry:

I would imagine that you could pick up a used 3" Kimber in that price range if you look around. I paid $930 for mine NIB, and I've seen them since for a little less than that. MSRP at the time was around $1050, IIRC. So I would think that something in the $750-$800 range wouldn't be too hard to find. I only put an ambi safety on mine because I'm a southpaw and the Stainless Ultra does not come equipped with one.

That being said, I don't put 300 rounds through it in a single range session either, while I do that with the others.

I use Gold Dot, Golden Sabre, and Magtech defensive rounds most of the time and have no trouble with any of them in these guns, which are all well used.

So, if you had to pick just one for EDC which would it be?

I prefer the alloy framed 4 inch for the weight, not the concealability.

I have had the stainless 3" Ultra Carry for about 8 years now with several years as my EDC and it doesn't look beat up at all.

Sounds like this is a Kimber love page. I can't complain. I've been carrying a Kimber Ultra for about a year now, and its very good. I've had a few times that the round doesn't chamber or gets caught up on the ramp. But a simple bump or re-rack gets it going and then it runs through the mag.

Kimbers, 3inch will serve you well. I like Springfield Armory and will eventually get the Loaded Micro Compact in .45 as well as an EMP.

However, for now, my Kimber suits me and gets the job done. A part of me wishes I bought the CPD for the extra money, but at the end of the day, I really don't need all of those extra features for the gun to go bang. Would I still like them, sure. I would love a collection like a few posts back. That's awesome. My plain black Ultra will do for now.
