Charles Cotton, on the "Springfield Champion Reliability" thread mentioned that he has a 1911
chambered in 9 x 23.
The "standard" 9MM is 9MM x 19, aka Luger and Parabellum.
9MM x 18 is used in Makarov pistols.
Is 9 x 23 MM ammo known by a particular name?
What handguns use 9 x 23?
IMHO, it seems that 9 x 23 would have to be special-ordered through some Internet ammo site.
Comments?

Yep, the 9 x 23 is also known as 9mm Largo.

From what I read, there is a difference in pressure between a 9x23 Winchester and a 9x23 Largo. They are not exactly the same.

Thank you gentlemen, for supplying the name of this cartridge.
As soon as I found the name, I found more information about this (link below)

9mm Largo is/was the standard Spanish military round. They had bolt-action rifles that fired it also.

.38 Super is another popular 9mm caliber for 1911 pistols.

Does anyone have a good table identifying the various ammunition designations indicating which are the same (9x19, 9mm Luger) and which are compatible (.38 Special in a .357)?

The 9X23 I'm talking about is not the 9mm Largo. It operates at much higher pressures and throws a 125 gr. JHP anywhere from 1450 to 1800 fps from a 5" gun. It gives you a very hot 357 Mag. equivalent in a semi-auto that's much more pleasant to shoot.
Don't try to use a Winchester (or handloaded) 9X23 in a Largo!!
Here's a good resource for 9X23, especially the "Bad 9X23 advice" sticky at the top. I love the 9X23, but it's an acquired taste and most folks won't go to the trouble of having one built, feeding it, etc.
