School me on Optics for my DPMS A3 Please
Re: School me on Optics for my DPMS A3 Please
Went to Bass Pro over the weekend and got hands-on with an EOTech XPS2 ($499) and a Trijicon 4x32 ACOG (~$1209), both on an A3. The Trijicon felt awkward to me (smaller field of view, the magnification, etc), also the red chevron sight felt pretty dim to me. I really like the EOTech, it seemed natural to me, easier to acquire targets. The gentleman who was showing me the sights served in the sandbox and said he started out with the EOTech but then got a Trijicon and that is what he preferred, but not the HUGE difference in price! I originally thought I wanted a 512 EOTech, but I like the shorter version, takes up less room on the rail, more room for other goodies down the line.

So...I think it has come down to an EOTech XPS2 or EXPS2?? Seems they are pretty similar except the the EXPS2 has a quick detach lever, sits a tad lower (I think?) and has the buttons on the side - which will be useful should I add a magnifier down the line. Comments/reviews from anyone?

Boy, did you ever pick wrong and waste a whole bunch of money......
Just kidding!!!
I just got an Eotech for my AR as well. Like you, this was my first venture outside of what I consider standard optics. I looked at several, including Aimpoint and Trijicon, but none of them were as quick to acquire and use as the Eotech. The big circle catches your view and it's pretty easy to then focus on the red dot. I wish the others would offer something similar as I'd really like to avoid anything that uses batteries without the ACOG cost. In the meantime, I do believe most of this optics stuff is just as much preference as it is application. At short distances, (50-100 yards), a red dot feels like cheating!
Since my AR probably won't be a target gun, I've zeroed mine at 50 yards and applied the 'Improved battle sight zero' zero to the irons. That gives me a sensible point of impact from point blank out to about 250 yards without any adjustment. If I need better I'll have to get a quick-disconnect mount and some magnifying glass of some type. Enjoy the new gizmo.

I have a TR24 1-4x and it's pretty good. Cheaper than an ACOG. The one beef I have with Eotech is their battery life. Picked mine up the other day after about 4 months of inactivity and the battery was dead.

Ditto on the battery life. I have an XPS2 and compared to an Aimpoint it EATS batteries. It was acquired in a trade and would not have been my first choice at all. But it works(when it has good batteries) like it should. My next optic will be a Trijicon Reflex on a carry handle mount or a 1-4x TR24 on A3 receiver. No more dead batteries for me. An Aimpoint micro would be my third choice.

I kinda like the looks of that Lucid. Anybody have any experience with them?

Got the EOTech XPS2 ($479) today from Cabela's, mounted it tonight....I like it!! Have yet to fire it/zero it, hopefully one day next week. Pix to come.
