February Austin area get together -- 2/24 Hill Country 1PM
Moderator: carlson1
I'm in San Antonio and would like to come up and shoot with you all if possible. So please add me to the list. Also, if you are ever down here in San Antonio, there is an outdoor range close to the house we could use. As far as I know, there are no restrictions on ammo. There are pistol/rifle/skeet ranges. There are no frills at this place but I use it when I get the chance to go out.
There is also no membership fee. The cost is $6 for the first gun and targets and $3 a gun after that. Not a big fan of that but it is the cheapest I know of around here.
Anyway, please keep me in mind when setting up the next shoot, where ever that is going to be. I'm definitely interested.

Well, ARC is a possibility, but to be considerate for other members, we are asked to keep to the recommended 3 guests per member. If we have enough ARC members, then this shouldn't be a problem.j1132s wrote: In the mean time, let me check with Austin Rifle Club and see if we can have it there this time.
You can use FMJ rifle rounds there. On 2/24 they have a scheduled match on their 40/60/77/100m silhouette range so that range isn't available. But the following should be: 25/50yd pistol range, 0-18yd pistol/rifle range, 100/200yd rifle range.
If you are a member of ARC and would like to hold the next gathering at ARC, please get in touch w/ me. If I can get enough ARC members (say 2 or 3 in addition to myself), I think ARC would make a great meeting place: close to Austin, outdoors, friendly members, safe and clean.

I must admit I have an ulterior motive for wanting the meeting at the Austin Rifle club. I’ve been thinking of joining, but would really like to see the range first I’ve been trying to decide between ARC and Fayette Co Gun Club. I’ve been to Fayette, but I haven’t seen ARC. Both are relatively close for me, so I’ll make the decision on which range facilities I like the best…

To join or not to join....
What are the dues for joining? I was looking on their web page but they won't list the cost.
I'm starting to think it's like the saying, "If you have to ask you can't afford it"!!

Would hill country rifle range be OK w/ everybody?
We can car pool from north Austin.
Also, there's an IPSC match (by River city shooters) at Blackhawk range in San Antonio the Sunday of 2/25. If there's interest, we can go over some basics for people who're interested in IPSC and arrange to car pool down there.

I can bring some steel targets for us to shoot at. They are only rated for ****.22LR**** though ...so let me know if you want to do some man-on-man steel shooting (If you've only shot paper, then prepare to have lots of fun)!
We can set them up at pistol or rifle distances. Hill Country rifle range, at least it used to, allows steel at 25yds+ (unlike ARC, which only allows steels at 40m+).
Edit to add: If I go to Cabela's this weekend, I'll buy some large caliber steel targets. Will keep you posted.

I need directions. Never been on Hamilton Pool Rd. Also, is FMJ OK? I want to shoot my M1 Garand if possible.Would hill country rifle range be OK w/ everybody?

I think, if you are talking about ARC, the annual dues ar $75. I don't think there's a fee for shooting at the range after that, and you get discounts for match shooting. FMJ is ok at the Hill Contry range. I'll bring an AR-15.O6nop wrote: I need directions. Never been on Hamilton Pool Rd. Also, is FMJ OK? I want to shoot my M1 Garand if possible.
Is there anyone want to try a Carbon-15? Please let me know and I'll bring it.
I'll bring my CZ 452.I can bring my Ruger 10/22 also.
Have we decided on a place?
I live and work in San Marcos, and could get a discounted room rate if anyone wanted to stay here.
I could do my best to get a discount in any other city if its too far to drive back the same day.
Whats yalls thoughts on bringing non CHL buddies along? I keep trying to convince my friend to hurry up and take the class.

Directions to Hill Country Rifle Range
Here's directions I got from a friend who went there often for IPSC shoots about a year ago. The main thing he said was that you'll feel that you are on that road much too long, but keep driving.
From the intersection of 360 and MoPac,
go south on 360,
go west on 2244,
go west on 71,
turn left on Hamilton Pool Rd,
The range is on the left side on Hamilton Pool Rd (driving from 71); it is past Ranch Road 12, but before a creek (there's a road call Stage Coach River Rd before the creek on the map, but he can't remember any road name). He says the range is not visible from the road; there is a very faded sign marking Hill Country range.

I've never been there before, and all the info is from IPSC shooters who used to shoot there with the ALSPPC. If anybody knows/has been there, please post your directions! Thanks.

Will bring the C-15.O6nop wrote:Oh, yeah!!!Is there anyone want to try a Carbon-15? Please let me know and I'll bring it.
I can bring a Mosin Nagant, an SKS and/or a Swedish Mauser if anyone's interested.
I'd like to check out an SKS, hear a lot about it. Can I buy a box of ammo from you to feed it?
