Online Resources for Louisiana

Post by hpcatx »

This summer, the Mrs. and I will be moving from Texas to Louisiana. While I am saddened to leave our great state, the move is positive for work and will bring us closer to family that never seems to venture out to Texas frequently enough. I haven't been a forum member for too long, but it seems that just as I get to know you all, I now have to say goodbye.

I've searched the forum (using both Google and the on-site search box) for information on Louisiana. I've turned up some good resources, such as the Louisiana State Police website for relevant laws, how to search to see if a restaurant/establishment actually has Class A liquor license, and bunches of anecdotes from our own forum members, but I have yet to find anything that remotely resembles the community found here. (Of course, credit goes to Charles and all the admins for creating and maintaining such an incredible site as TexasCHLForum.com!) Can anyone recommend any online forums or other Louisiana-based resources for me to checkout?

Apparently, although you have to be aware of local ordinances, Louisiana has open carry, if you care to do so. I just happened to run across this website last night: http://www.laopencarry.org/. I was watching a show on the History channel about some Louisiana pawnbroker when I realized that a lot of the people on the show were open carrying. Interesting.

Where in Louisiana are you moving to? If it's in the Lake Charles area Matthew Courtney is a great instructor or he can refer you to one if not in the LC area. His business is Louisiana Shooters Unlimited web site http://www.louisianashooters.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. He is a personal friend tell him Morris sent you.

I've heard the Orleans and Jefferson Parish police don't care much for open carry and will take action. As they say, at least for this instance, you'll take the ride and maybe beat the wrap. My plan is to convert my Texas CHL to out of state until which time (six months) I can get a Louisiana one. Only major problem I see in LA law's are that there's no 30.06 equivalent, so gun-buster signs apparently carry weight.

Thanks for the recommendation/referral! Perhaps he can point me to some folks closer to what will be home. While Lake Charles is still drivable, I'm heading to the greater New Orleans area.

Very true.. and it's when I'm in between the private residence and my vehicle that I feel most vulnerable, so I don't like the idea of having to disarm in the car.

While on the Louisiana State Police website, my understanding is that legislation in 2010 changed the rules about "Any church, synagogue, mosque or similar place of worship." Now the person with the CHL (or it's CHP I believe in Louisiana) needs to seek special dispensation from the religious organization first, potentially have to take eight additional hours of training, and is then allowed to carry in such a location. I think everything else is still in force.
