Testing your new "everyday carry"

I would liken a 'carry gun' to marriage. Trust, reliability, and dependability has to be built between the two. If one is broken, then the marriage suffers. If continually broken, then the marriage will likely fail. This takes time and there is no rushing the process.

My gun vowes: "I promise to clean you, fix you, and take care of you. You must continually demonstrate that I can trust you especially in exigent circumstances. You must be reliable and demonstrate that you will be dependable.

Maybe it's a given or I might have missed it, but I haven't heard anyone mention testing each of the magazines they will carry to make sure they also function properly.

It's a given to me, but a good point to bring up! Some may not know, or think about this...

That is what I missed! It took me forever to shoot 2000 rounds, one at a time.

I chose the third option, but it is only half right for me. I shoot 200 rounds of ball and then 100 rounds of my SD ammo through a new gun. In order for me to pronounce the gun and the ammo ready for carry, there must be no failures though this course of fire.

I only bring it up because I'm sure most if not all of us have run into a magazine with a bad spring or some kind of deformity or damage the prevented them from functioning properly. I've had two factory Glock mags that would not allow the slide to remain locked back after the last round was fired. I've had another one or two that the springs became so week that they would not cycle the last round or two properly. Once I replaced the springs in those they were fine. The first two just went into the trash after removing the base plates and springs for spare parts.

Absolutely. I had to replace all 6 of my defective S&W 45 magazine springs...Of course, one email to S&W and the springs were sent to me.

I picked the second option although it doesn't really fit what I do. Generally I run 200-300 rounds of FMJ through and then 50-100 rounds of my carry ammo.

Good point, but yes it was a given when i responded. All MAGs for the gun in question are used as part of the reliability / training run up.

And a new mag has to be used several range trips before it goes in a spare carrier.
