Winchester M1917 Enfield help please

last Saturday my FIL says, "Hey check out this gun I bought about 15 years ago at the gun show and has been sitting in my room since then..."

He comes out with an awesome Winchester M1917 "Enfield"... The stock was in great condition, no cracks or deep gouges, the action worked without any issues and the barrel appears to be clean and without rust or pits. It needs some cleaning and oil but everything is there and works.

I looked up the SSN and it was manufactured in January 1918.

He is missing the bayonet, sling and cleaning kit.

Here are my issues...

1. How or who can tell me if it is safe for him to shoot? (It's 96 years old and who knows the last time it was fired)
2. Anyone know a local dealer that I can price the missing pieces? (I'd like to get him the bayonet etc...)
3. If it is not safe to fire, anyone know someone who can mount this in like a shadow box as a show piece? (It shouldn't be relegated to sitting under the bed)

The HCGS is this weekend in Pasadena and there are usually a couple of guys with old military whatnots. Any reputable picture framing store should be able to make you a shadow box to your specifications. As far a shooting it; maybe you could call Collectors Firearms and see if they can inspect it. They might even have your missing parts.....for a premium price.

Just order a 30.06 field guage from Natchez shooting supply, I think they are made by forester. If the bolt does not close on this you are good to go.

I have a Springfield 1903 A3 of approximately the same age. It shoots like a dream.
