Revolver Grips

Just picked up a S&W Model 64-5 K-Frame square butt revolver. I believe it has the original "oversized" grips (they extend below the bottom of the butt, and join together at the front and bottom of the grip. A few questions for revolver gurus, as the last revolver I played with was 42 years ago.

1. Are these type grips known as "Oversize Grips?" reason I ask, is I'm looking for some new rosewood checkered finger groove grips and I see them advertised as "oversize finger groove grips." Me thinks they don't mean " grips for chubby fingers - correct"

2. Do I still have the option of putting on smaller K-Frame square butt grips? (I would assume so). Any info appreciated.

These are factory 'target stocks.' Any grips made for a K- or L-Frame square frame revolver will fit this gun. Factory wood grips with finger grooves are usually known as 'combat' stocks.

I'm not sure whose 'oversized' grips you're looking at, but to me the term suggests that the stocks extend outside the lines of the grip frame, like your target stocks, most Pachmayrs, etc. In other words, not magna or service stock style.

You can put square frame grips on. I agree that the presentation grips are huge! I have Ahrends wood grips on my k frames. They fit great for me with average hands. I have a extra pair if finger groove grips if youre interested ill send a picture for ya. They are not checkered though.

Here's a quick and dirty picture of a 19-5 with Ahrends Retro Combats on it. They cover the frontstrap, but not the backstrap. For carry, I like the PC Magna grips with a Tyler T-grip.

Thanks guys. Here is an example of the grips I was looking at (note the use of the term "oversize." I just need to know if they extend below the bottom of the grip and butt together as my current ones do, and I realize they cover the front strap and not the backstrap.

I'm sure the first set cover the bottom of the gripframe. I know the S&W 'Combats' do.

WOW, I have a S&W 686 - 6" 357 that I have wanted to put on similar grips. I like those as well. I have the stock and some pachmayrs with the finger grooves and they are nice. But I do like those rosewood ones. Thanks for showing. Now I may have to order some!

Can someone confirm that these internal circular metal objects on each inside of my grips are nothing more than to hold the external S&W logos on the outside? I can see no other function. As I know zip squat about revolvers, I thought I'd ask the experts

Yep, all they do is hold the medallions.

They also index the stock into the cutout on the frame for a better fit on this and some other types of grips.
