Rahm Declares Total War on IL Gun Owners
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants lawmakers to require that all handguns in Illinois be registered with the state, or gun owners could face felony charges. [More] http://waronguns.blogspot.com/2012/02/r ... l-gun.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Can someone please explain the logic of this proposal to me?RPB wrote:Thursday, February 09, 2012

The legislation is intended to prevent the illegal transfer of guns by requiring owners to contact police if their gun is lost or stolen. Sellers would have to report all handgun sales and transfers, and buyers would have proof they are not paying for a stolen gun.
"It will create accountability for gun owners and firearms dealers to ensure that they act in a responsible manner in order to keep guns from falling into the hands of criminals," McCarthy said.
It makes the Mayor feel better, and gets re-election points from "the government will protect me" crowd.RoyGBiv wrote:Can someone please explain the logic of this proposal to me?RPB wrote:Thursday, February 09, 2012

By what mechanism do the proponents of this idea suggest that gun registration would deter/reduce crimes?

I buy a gun.
The gun gets "registered"
Scenario #1. I commit a crime with that gun
In what way does knowing my gun's serial number help solve that crime, unless I drop it at the scene?
Is a ballistics database also part of this proposal? [Didn't see it mentioned in the article]
Scenario #2. My gun is lost or stolen.
So... now what good is the registration data?
Even if the gun turns up at a crime scene, what use is the registration tie-back to me?

The first Soviet gun controls were imposed during the Russian Civil War, as Czarists, Western troops, and national independence movements battled the central Red regime. Firearm registration was introduced on April 1, 1918. [13] On August 30, Fanny Kaplan supposedly wounded Lenin during an assassination attempt; the attempted assassination spurred a nationwide reign of terror. [14] In October 1918, the Council of People's Commissars (the government) ordered the surrender of all firearms, ammunition, and sabres. [15] As has been the case in almost every nation where firearms registration has been introduced, registration proved a prelude to confiscation.
Illinois is not a real bad place and many of its citizens are nice, sensible people. It's a downright dirty, cryin' shame that the good people of Illinois are governed by the goofy, misinformed masses and corrupt politicians of Chicago and Cook County.srothstein wrote:I know we have been overusing the word "war" lately in US politics (war on drugs, war on poverty, etc.) but a war on gun owners seems like a really dumb idea to me. I know Rahm has a small army of cops in Chicago, but I would bet that they are really outnumbered by the gunowners in the state. The PD may have some equipment and training that the gunowners do not have, but there is an old military saying about quantity having a quality of its own. If it really came down to an outright war, my money would not be on Rahm or any politician to win.
You are exactly right. I was privy to some of the planning scenarios back in the 70's and 80's and the military's worst nightmare was facing a million troops on the field - regardless of how ill-trained they were. Suffice to say, there were no good solutions short of enormous nuclear fireballs and they alone were pretty much self-defeating.The PD may have some equipment and training that the gunowners do not have, but there is an old military saying about quantity having a quality of its own.
