Now normally, I'm a very laid back, mind my own business, type of guy, but I just couldn't leave this one alone. So I pipe up, "Wow, assault rifle? What's that look like? I've never seen one." He looks at me in his most serious, "You gotta be kidding me looks" and turns to point at a .22 cal AR-15 knockoff and says, "That one right there, that's an assault rifle." So I look at him with MY most serious "You gotta be kidding me looks" and start asking him a few questions.
Do you know what type of gun was used to assassinate Kennedy? NO
Do you know what type of gun was used to shoot Reagan? NO
Do you know what type of gun was used to shoot Gifford? NO
Do you know what type of gun most BG's use to commit crimes? UH, pistols I think...
I then proceeded to tell him that none of those crimes were committed with an "assault rifle" and then went on to educate him on how the "assault rifle" came to be (liberal media and anti-gunners) and that if he was seriously considering ever owning a "tactical rifle" in the future, that he should seriously reconsider his selection of words when describing guns. Once he got over his shock and quit looking at me like I was some kind of crazy gun loving nut, (he was right, I just didn't let him know that) he completely shocked me. He apologized for his slip and proceeded to tell me how glad he was that I called him on it and that he had never really considered what he was saying or how his opinions had been influenced by the media. We had a more brief discussion about the elections in November and that's when I told him he should seriously consider his selection of candidates while keeping in mind his future desire to freely own and shoot guns in the GREAT U.S. of A.
I think we were both very enlightened by the exchange. I'm not totally convinced it made a difference in what I said to him, but I certainly gained a new perspective on how the media is influencing, misleading and misinforming our youth while at the same time eroding away their basic understanding of what's real in their world.
Funny thing though...the sporting goods representative never did show up. I had to come back after lunch to complete the transaction.
