(The "Guns in Schools" bill has been a major issue for many of us here at BOR, due in no small part to our strong ties to the UT community. Thanks to founder of Students for Gun Free Schools Texas and multiple-time "Best of Austin" Chronicle award winner John Woods for this post. - promoted by Katherine Haenschen)

Over the last two legislative sessions, I organized students against bills which would have forced colleges and universities to allow guns in classrooms. I did so because I lost people close to me in the Virginia Tech shooting, and grew tired of lawmakers exploiting our tragedy to promote a political agenda having nothing to do with campus safety.

We won that fight, in no small part because of people like Chief Acevedo and Constable Bruce Elfant, as well as all the other members of law enforcement who oppose arming college students.

So it was with great concern that I learned Michael Cargill is running for Travis County Constable, Precinct 2.

I know

Apparently I too am a "Virginia Tech survivor" since neither of us were there at the time Cho ran around, however, I was 65 miles close to Fort Hood than John was when that massacre took place ... and thousands of miles closer to Killeen when the Luby's shooting occurred, so I had more close calls than he did. (In addition to surviving 2 armed robberies where 2 shotguns, and 7 pistols were in the hands of criminals)

As a member of the faculty of a private college, located in Travis County, I would love to be able to carry in campus buildings. Not because I fear my students, but I would like to be able to carry in order to protect my students and myself if needed. Very few students would get CHL's, several faculty already have their CHL. The only problem is that weapons have to be left in cars. Also, some of us occasionally need to teach at remote sites that are not always in good neighborhoods, and I, for one, doubt that the unarmed security guard in the parking lots at those places would be much help in a "situation".

"Chief Acevedo and Constable Bruce Elfant"

If these two LOVE gun control so much, why don't they just move to NYC or San Francisco? It would be like a paradise for them there...why, those places are perfectly crime free since they have such wonderful gun control laws...ridiculous that we have to put up with those types here in Texas.

But Mike Cargill was also one of the chief voices lobbying for passage of the "guns in classrooms" bills.

These bills were about opening a new market for firearms sales and concealed handgun licensing classes - and Mr. Cargill was one of those who stood to gain a great deal from that market. You see, Mr. Cargill earns his living at least in part by running CHL Class Austin, which - among other things - markets CHL classes to college students

John taught Martial Arts in Virginia, so +he was anti-gun there too so more people would take his class ...

The California folks move to Austin because they are tired of California, then they try to turn it into a clone of California. Plus, the universities always seem to attract leftists anyway. What do you expect from that sort?

Too bad I don't live in Travis county. I would vote for Mr. Cargill. Wish there was a way to leave comments on that website. Wonder why you can't, NOT? :smilelol5:

I "Friended" Burnt Orange Report (at the suggestion of my daughter) just to keep an eye on what the opposition was doing. Occasionally I post something inflammatory, but it gets deleted pretty quick.

Almost anything John writes ... will have comments disabled .... truth, facts, statistics and logic often aren't welcomed when he's done talking

In the off months they build "apparent" (imaginary) credibility/credentials
