Web site posters misunderstood editorial on guns

Post by SteyrM40 »

Hello everyone,

Well, this is my first post to this forum. Steve sent me over here from Packing.org to post the following article about a gun editorial appearing in the Tahlequah Daily Press in the neighbouring state of Oklahoma.

I have come across an interesting set of articles in the Tahlequah Daily Press that may be of some interest to you. An August 5th article by Sean Kennedy entitled "The right weapon, training make for gun safety" offered an "objective" story about self-defense carry in Oklahoma. There are some disconcerting comments by some interviewees such as Jeff Wilson who says "I'm not one of those freaks who drags a gun around everywhere I go, but I do a lot of driving [to and from Siloam Springs, Ark.] at night, and my car's not in too good a shape."

Anyway, that article really annoyed a lot of people. Many of them decided to write their opinions about the article on the Daily Press' website. The comments were so many that the Tahlequah Daily Press printed an editorial just 4 days later entitled "Web site posters misunderstood editorial on guns". As you can guess, people again were quick to send their opinions to the Tahlequah Daily Press.

To contrast, there is an August 8th article on their site entitled "Get a gun, stop a terrorist?". I know what I think. Maybe some people here would like to send their opinions to the staff at the Daily Press.

Stay safe...

Good post SteyrM40,

Pretty sad that there are dishonest/ignorant journalists like that out there spewing their garbage to the public.

That line from the tahlequah daily press Editorial "The Point is, anybody who is stupid enough to think he can stop a bunch of terrorists from flying an airplane into a skyscraper is probably too stupid to carry a gun" is almost beyond belief. It totally ignores the reality of what happened on 911 (passengers overwhelming the terrorists on Flight 93) and the fact that air marshals have proven highly effective(when they're around).

Thanks Steyr...Bout dad-gum time you got over here...

I think you may know a few folks here already...

I think that article illustrates a lot of things that are negatively spun in regards to our rights...

And that anyone regardless of what their experience level or background is, should feel they can come in and comment on issues and not be made out by others as some sort of "freak"...

That just rubs me a bit against the grain...

I'm glad you posted this here today...

Thanks for the post, and welcome to our little boards.

It boggles the mind that some people actually think this way.

Hi everyone,

Well, it seems as if the Tahlequah Daily Press could not handle the pressure from around the country. at 8:08AM this morning they posted the following on their on-line comment page:
We have elected to stop publishing posts on the gun issue, mainly because posters from other parts of the country continue to use selected excerpts to quote the editorials out of context. For instance, we disagreed with an author who said the American public “learned on 9/11 that the government couldn’t protect us; we maintain Americans already knew that well before 9/11. But in a post below, a Phil Mann twists our words to have us suggesting we believe just the opposite. These continued attacks from dozens of people from other parts of the country, who have never before read the Daily Press but whose computers have been keyed to “alert them to any topic related to gun control, are not germane to the ongoing dialogue in this forum.

Since you can no longer post to their site, you may want to drop them an e-mail ( press@intellex.com , presspublisher@intellex.com ) to let them know what you think.

Ahhhh shucks!

Touchy little farts aren't they...

I certainly didn't give them a lot of grief...I only asked for clarification on a few things...I was polite, courteous, gracious...Are there any other "ious's" I left out???

Opps...I can't say "fart" can I???

I promise not to say it again......for at least a week, ok?
