Going to St. Thomas - US Virgin Islands

Post by Rex B »

I seriously doubt I will be able to carry there. But I've since read that they do have crime there, and it's not insignificant.
Anyone here have current knowledge of gun laws there?

No reciprocity so can't carry there on your license. No non-resident licenses issued. http://handgunlaw.us/states/usvirginislands.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Take a cab or other public transportation.

I haven't been to England, but I have been to Australia a few times. My first time there a few shipmates were killed in a traffic accident that they caused. I don't remember if they were making a left or right turn, but they instinctively went back to the right side of the road and collided head on with another vehicle. The three Sailors were killed and I don't think I ever heard what happened to the Aussie's. Being fairly young and not at all familiar with other country's traffic laws I just chose to stick with public transportation.

Virgin Islands Temporary Permit

Persons with a valid Virginia concealed carry permit may apply individually to the United States Virgin Islands Police Department for temporary reciprocal recognition of a CCDW license while in the Virgin Islands. This temporary recognition is normally for ninety (90) days from the date of issue.

An application for temporary privileges may be requested from:

Interesting. Probably has something to do with Virginia and Virgin Islands in the name for reciprocity. They think it's a territory of the state. LOL

Might be worth a call or letter to the Office of the Commisioner and see what you coudl do with a Texas license.

These two young sailors have just rented a scooter in Charlotte Amalie and are about to go tearing down the wrong side of the street wondering why everyone is driving on the wrong side of the street. And I didn't have my camera ready for that shot. No one was injured.<br /><br />Note the shore patrol van immediately behind them, SP headquarters was right next to the scooter rental place and apparently one of their favorite activities was watching sailors and tourists pull out of the rental lot and go EEEEKKK!!!

Is one allowed to have pointy objects on one's person there?

What I could find so far
TITLE FOURTEEN Crimes
Chapter 113. Weapons

14 V.I.C. § 2251 (2011)

§ 2251. Carrying or using dangerous weapons

(a) Whoever--

(1) has, possesses, bears, transports, carries or has under his proximate control any instrument or weapon of the kind commonly known as a blackjack, billy, sandclub, metal knuckles, bludgeon, switchblade knife or gravity knife or electric weapon or device; or

(2) with intent to use the same unlawfully against another, has, possesses, bears, transports, carries or has under his proximate control, a dagger, dirk, dangerous knife, razor, stiletto, or any other dangerous or deadly weapon shall--

(A) be fined $5,000 and imprisoned not more than five (5) years; or

(B) if he has previously been convicted of a felony, or has, possesses, bears, transports, carries or has under his proximate control, any such weapon during the commission or attempted commission of a crime of violence (as defined in section 2253(d)(1) hereof) shall be fined $10,000 and imprisoned not more than fifteen (15) years, which penalty shall be in addition to the penalty provided for the commission of, or attempt to commit, the crime of violence.

(b) For purposes of subsection (a) of this section, the term "switchblade knife" means any knife which has a blade which opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring, or other device in the handle of the knife; and the term "gravity knife" means any knife which has a blade which is released from the handle or sheath thereof by the force of gravity or the application of centrifugal force which, when released, is locked in place by means of a button, spring, lever or other device; and the term "electric weapon or device" means any device which, through the application or use of electric current, including battery operated devices, is designed, redesigned, used, or intended to be used for offensive or defensive purposes, the destruction of life, or the infliction of injury.

(c) Notwithstanding the provisions of this section, nothing contained herein shall prohibit the use of electric weapons or devices by peace officers in the conduct of their lawful duties.

HISTORY: --Amended May 16, 1974, No. 3566, § 1, Sess. L. 1974, p. 98; Sept. 10, 1986, No. 5194, § 2, Sess. L. 1986, p. 209; Dec. 29, 2001, No. 6493, § 1(b), Sess. L. 2001, p. 394.
I don't see any reference to blade length but it looks like anything that opens mechanically in any way is illegal.

I've been to St. John and St. Thomas just once, only for a couple of hours (port of call during a cruise) but I still remember it...so BEAUTIFUL! Wife and I have been looking at renting a villa there for a week sometime soon...got an extra $10-20K that I can borrow? :biggrinjester: Champagne tastes and crawfish budget. LOL
