"his Ruger .357-caliber Western-style revolver fell out of its holster and fired a round"
He must be a quick draw cowboy shooter but forgot the Cowboy rule. Result - Holes in the outhouse roof!

That's why you keep an empty chamber under the hammer, pardner!

If this happened as reported:

1. his revolver was made in 1973 or before, and

2. the owner(s) neglected to take advantage of Ruger's upgrade.

Ruger single actions made after 1973 can be safely carried with six. That is when a transfer bar was added that comes into play when the hammer is cocked. This eliminated the possibility of a hammer impact causing a discharge.

:iagree:

I own a Vaquero and it has transfer bar. Its about as safe an action as you can get.

I don't understand the intent of the thread-title. Did Arizona do something bad?

Only Ruger SAA style revolvers (cowboy action) had the issue. Their DA revolvers never did. I can, unfortunately, attest to the indescretion and consequence of having six chambers loaded.

I think the OP was refering to police asking for charges to be brought against the man.

I would say that the reaction it provoked was a "rapid evacuation."
