Had a dog incident once that still scares the bejabbers out of me when I think about it.
It was a quiet evening at home. I was out in the front, sweeping the driveway after doing yardwork. My kid, who was a toddler at this time, was in the driveway near me.
From up the street comes a rather nasty looking large dog. Definitely pit bull type. The dog is across the street and approaching along the sidewalk.
My kid spots the dog just about the same moment the dog spots my kid.
The dog instantly goes into aggressive behavior. Quick as a shot that dog is in my driveway growling and running towards the kid.
I freak! All I had was a wimpy little broom. I grabbed and THREW the kid up onto the top of my truck cab. The dog halted, growling and started creeping slowly towards me. As I was very near the garage door I turned and grabbed the first thing I could see that I could use as a weapon( a shovel). I went at the dog. I managed one good whack before the dog turned and ran out into the street. The dog stood there looking at me. As I would approach he would stay just out of range. I chased him maybe 50yds before I returned and retreived the kid from the top of the truck.
Immediately went in and called the police. I went back out with my "personal protection device" but the dog was far down the street by then and moving quickly.
The police came by but the dog was long gone.
Never saw the dog again.
I can say with 100% assurance that I would of smoked that mutt if I had had my CHL weapon on me.

Funny I came across this thread becasue I too have a dog story:

First, let me say I live outside the city limits in a very rural subdivision near the lake. The houses are spread apart by atleast 1 1/2 mi or so. We have alot of folks with dogs, but all of them stay put and dont cause problems. One day working outside, I discovered a mama cat who had decided to have her kittens underneath my garage (5 kittens) She looked thirsty and hungry, so I fed and watered her and went on my way. That night, while reading, I heard a commotion outside near the garage. Grabbing my AR equipped with a Surefire, I slipped on my shoes and took off. I left out the front, working my way around the house to the back where the garage was. I shouldered my AR and turned the corner, my Surefire light popped on and right away I saw one of the dogs, it was busy trying to kill the mama cat while it's partner had one of the kittens (still howling) in its mouth. They looked like wild cur-mix dogs with no collars, they were threatening my property/domesticated pets; I had a clean background; I quickly made the decision to kill them.

My Green tritium front pin found the 1st dog at 15 yards fighting with the mama cat, I put the 1st round behind the shoulder and the second thru his neck. I pivoted to find the second dog already retreating with the kitten in it's mouth, by the time I had a good bead it was about 30 yds, I let a three burst out, dropping him like a stone. By the time I got to the kitten, he was dead. When I finally found mama cat, she had some pretty bad puncture wounds, which I cleaned and dressed. With some searching, I found all four of the kittens not harmed.

Needless to say, I still have mama cat (named Pearl) and I found homes for all four kittens. I talked to some of my neighbors, who told me those same dogs had been running cattle and tearing up trash all over.

Good Riddens. ;-)

Not having my CHL yet I often carry a stun baton while walking my lab "Bruce." I have encountered many a dog that "tried" to attack Bruce and a quick jolt of 800,000 volts sent them scurrying and limping. Even after I get my CHL I'll still likely carry it. As far as I know, there are no restrictions on walking with one. :deadhorse: <- Maybe we should change this emoticon to a dog!
