5.56 and .223 ammo prices
Where can I find the best deals, both locally and online? What's the personal recommended ammo for AR's?

for target practice or self defense? I like SGammo in Stillwater, ok. I have bought a few cases of lake city "green tip" from them. They also have FBI load federal which some guys like. I have a few boxes of it but now much. Also a good place to buy talon's for your pistols. They have fair shipping rates.

I'm in Austin.
I'll probably wind up with a few boxes of a premium load for home defense (TAPS?), otherwise I want 5.56 on stock and .223 for plinking.

Palmetto State Armory had XM193 for $5.49 a box until recently. It's up to $5.99 but still not a bad deal. Sgammo's price is similar.

For 100 yd accuracy both my ARs have done best with Hornady 55gr. V-Max. They're both 1 in 9 twist 16". Academy usually has em .

Both Cheaper than Dirt and Palmetto State Armory are selling metal ammo cans with 420 rounds of Lake City XM855 62 grain (green tip) FMJ ammo for $150. It comes out to about .36 cents per round before taxes or shipping. Not great, but not too bad, either. In fact, I purchased a can of this today. The ammo is on stripper clips, 30 rounds in each little cardboard box and it also comes with a "spoon" (metal guide) for feeding the stripper clips of ammo into the magazines for ARs. Mine is being put away for future use since my local range doesn't allow FMJ...but now I won't feel bad about burning through the really cheap steel case HP stuff.
