what choke for self defense ?
what choke for self defense ?
What shotgun choke should be used for self-defense with 00 buckshot? modified, full, cylinder, improved cylinder?
Re: what choke for self defense ?
Most home defense shotguns are cylinder bore (aka no choke.)

Mine is cylinder bore.

I would suggest going out and patterning the shotgun with the ammo you plan on utilizing and try different chokes at the maximum distance you feel would be required in a home defense situation. In my case it is about 40 feet and I will get very little spread from the 9 pellets although the hole will stop the threat almost immediatly.............

Re: what choke for self defense ?
Cylinder bore (No Choke) or Improved cylinder are the most common. With Federal Flite control wads the pattern is very tight regardless of choke. If you are using some other shell you might try a modified choke to tighten the pattern. We use a shotgun not because you can't miss but because it's a "burst" weapon - - - multiple hits in a small area like with a SMG. The idea is for the target to absorb all the pellets from the blast in a small area.

No choke.
Re: what choke for self defense ?
For self defense at inside the house ranges, cylinder or improved cylinder will work just fine with just about any buckshot round.
Once you get outside, a shotgun equipped with interchangeable chokes and shooting different loads with different chokes can increase the effective range, sometimes dramatically. Last weekend at the farm I shot one round of Federal Low Recoil Flitecontrol 00 Buckshot out of a bone stock Remington 870 Express with a 28 inch barrel and Modified choke. The pattern was 15 inches...at 50 YARDS.
Flitecontrol Buckshot is good stuff.
