A bad economy does tend to accentuate our differences. But those differences are always there, otherwise there would be nothing to accentuate. So, in a sense, it's always been like this. (Except for a short period during WWII and about a decade and a half following it. I think that was the time when we were the most united as a country).

Agreed. But communism was not an accepted ideology, there was little if any debate about maintaining our sovereignty or that we the people should keep and bear arms. The democratic party was, by and large, a vastly different party than they are now. So political differences were, well, political yet we were all Americans and had a singular focus on bettering ourselves, being self reliant and helping our neighbor as opposed to the government deciding who deserved our hard earned money. The attitude was 180 degrees from what we see now.

Does it just appear this way because of the poor economy; and everyone is looking for a scapegoat? Or have we changed as a people? Or has it always been like this, and I just don't remember?
Naaaahhh, it's the fault of the democrats.

Hyphenated-Americanism...... Unless we figure out how to put the "American" part first, we'll never recover our spark, our true greatness.

American, that's me... I'm a lot of other things too, but, this first and foremost.

I forgot about Bush. I hear that entropy and dark matter are his fault too.

No, I'm pretty sure those were Dick Cheney's doing. Actually, I think that Cheney shot dark matter in the face.
