Taking boy child to a 4-H BB gun competition at Camp Mabry in Austin in a couple of weeks. I've seen other discussions about firearms on post but haven't been able to find a clear answer so I stopped by the guard house last weekend and asked a guard. His response was no firearms, no exceptions, leave them at home, thank you have a nice day.
I know the guard house isn't the best place for complete answers but I haven't found a number or email for anybody who can give me a complete list of options such as do they have somewhere I can check the pistol and retrieve it when we leave?
Ideas?
Thanks!
Camp Mabry

Whew...Barely made it...
Wish I had something constructive to tell you...But you did the right thing, but maybe in the wrong way...Asking has never been a real constructive way to get an answer out of the troops at the door...
They will 99.9999999% say the exact same thing you got there at most places...So I have learned not to ask at all...
You do what you believe is right for you, and according to the law...This appears to be private property, so in a sense you have been given notice...I've heard of Camp Mabry, but don't know much more about it...
If the 4-H folks are putting this event on, they appear to be leasing the use of this facility, I stand to be corrected, but isn't that a state scholastic organization??? There may lie the secret to your dillema...
As for Camp Mabry, find out who pays the bills, who supports it...There may be some help there...

Hmm, See, I knew there was something quasi-funny about the place...AG-EE wrote:Wow, you get the award for the most perplexing question on the forum. Camp Mabry is owned by the state, but houses the headquarters and facilities for the Texas National Guard.
Does that make it quasi-federal property? I don't know.
Could ask the Provost Marshal (to secure your carry weapon while on the post)??? I've heard that has been an option (talked about) at other Army facilities...With varying degrees of professional courtesy extended...
I guess it depends on how much you want to push it...I believe it has a low degree of success, but if you don't have a problem with asking...I'd give it a shot...

You should contact the Post Commander's office for regulations on civilians carrying firearms. It should be listed in the Austin phone book.
The Post Commander's General Orders supersede local law while on Post.
I also recall that Mabry is a hybrid post - with Federal and State property.
Most bases will allow visiting civilians to drop them off at the CQ the or Provost's office.
Unrelated -
A lot of Soldiers and Marines ( at least when I used Mabry ), including myself, kept their handguns and rifles in their cars when working on post.
When we carried side arms as part of our mission, we had the option of using our own instead of drawing from the Armory.
At the time there was no published order on Soldier-owned personal weapons on post and in any case given the very good BN commanders present, it would not have been enforced at that time - this being the late 80s and early 90s.
Again, call the Post Commander's office.

Weapons on Post
The gate guard was right. However, you should be able to go directly to the the Post armory and check it upon arrival/exit. Check with the Post Law Enforcement Desk or Provost Marshall for specifics. I highly advise not trying to carry concealed without checking first--regardless of state, federal, 4-H, or any other involvement--it is still a military instillation and "Possesion of deadly weapons is prohibited" If you check it in the armory, take a cable lock to prevent "curiosity" from happening. Good Luck!
