I regularly drive through USBP checkpoints at Alpine and Marathon with my Colt M4 carbine loaded on the seat next to me. Have also gone throught the checkpoint at Sierra Blanca as well with nary a look or a comment about my rifle. I never go anywhere here in Brewster county without my rifle on the seat, Big Bend National Park included.stash wrote:I know you said you are going to transport your AR in the box but I wonder what kinda looks someone would get (if any) going through that Border Patrol check point in Sierra Blanca on I10 with it exposed?

Not to pick at bones.....but in another thread (or maybe earlier in this thread) you told another member that people overrated the dangers of going into BBNP, but you bring an AR in there with you. Is this an inconsistency, or do you always have one with you wherever you go? Just wondering....Terlingueno wrote:I regularly drive through USBP checkpoints at Alpine and Marathon with my Colt M4 carbine loaded on the seat next to me. I have an AR with me because I live and work in the park. There truly hasn't been any incidents in the park, yet. In the other thread I was passing along information about the basic non existence of violent crime in the park and about open carrying of a rifle, which the superintendent has disallowed(by his authority or his perceived authority). There has been some nasty characters apprehended from Mexico by USBP in the area. Drug loads come through south Brewster regularly, not as much as near Presidio or Sanderson or Del Rio, but the traffic is here. The MX military is pushing the Zetas west and the Juarez cartel is moving east. There are cartel operatives on the other side of the river. I have seen them. Key words are nothing has happened, yet. So I always have my rifle whether just about in the park, or going to Terlingua, Alpine or Ft Stockton. So yeah, I always have one with me in the truck wherever I go.The Annoyed Man wrote:Not to pick at bones.....but in another thread (or maybe earlier in this thread) you told another member that people overrated the dangers of going into BBNP, but you bring an AR in there with you. What is the laws concerning RIFLE transport in the state without a CASE.. I have the BOX I shipped it to myself in..
But I am concerned with transport.. I do have a PA carry permit, not that I think that would matter considering this is a rifle..
I can't just drive with this thing loaded inside the truck obviously...
Can I transport it in the BOX in the rear of the Explorer/Cherokee SUV?? (unloaded)..
Why ship the rifle? Get a TSA approved case and FLY with it..... As for driving with it in Texas, you should have no problems as long as you are not doing anything illegal (drinking, shooting on or across the roadway etc)
Big Bend National Park.....A CHL is good there and you may take a long gun into the park but the Federal Rules for guns in the park apply. (Unloaded, etc....se park rules) Remember the US doesn't have "operational control" of large parts of the border and specifically that area.....it is the frontier for sure and you should as always use caution. As a rule I would drive with the "thing loaded in my truck" and bring a friend with one too....

There are border patrol check points that are permanent and mobile in that region as well.....you might just come over a hill and there they are.....Be polite and keep your hands in sight. They just want to know where you are from and where you are going and who you have under the blanket in the bed of the truck

Enjoy your time in Texas....( a good pelican case or similar would serve you well for the airlines. They can't seem to break mine but the cheap aluminium ones they must roll over with the fork lift

Thanks for the clarification. BTW, I agree with your reasoning. I have no local knowledge of specific crimes, but you "hear" lots of stories, and where there's smoke, there's at least the possibility of fire. If I were working in a secluded area of Big Bend, with at least some degree of risk and far from backup, I'd carry one in my vehicle at all times too. So I don't think you're wrong or anything. I was just trying to reconcile the two posts.Terlingueno wrote:I have an AR with me because I live and work in the park. There truly hasn't been any incidents in the park, yet.
