Notice that he wasn't talking about the primary, but rather "the party's ultimate nominee? That comes after the primary. Vote for whomever you want in the primary, but unless you don't care if Obama wins, vote for whomever the ultimate nominee turns out to be—which at this point looks like it's most likely going to be Romney. Vote for anyone other than Romney in the primary to send a message that Texas won't eagerly accept whatever leftover scraps the national party sends us.
