Defensive mode, 75% of a gunfight is spent figuring out how to not get shot.. the other 25% is spent peeking around corners and such to see if you can squeeze off a round or two...unless you have really good cover-

It's a little different if your on the offensive. I remember when clearing houses and such, it's about 25% figuring out how to not get shot, and 75% kill mode.

I shot a LOT less on the defensive than I did on the offensive. And another thing--ammo does go fast. 30 round mags went pretty durn quickly, even in semi-auto. If you manage to get yourself some good cover, it was super easy to dump mags on auto quicker than your team could move.

Do military boys retain their empty mags?

British ones do. They have to turn them all in to the quartermaster before teatime

I was hunting with a friend and his father years ago in Pennsylvania, when someone pulled over on the side of the road and started shooting at a deer in the field. We were behind the deer in the woodline. I heard the 2 bullets zip over my head, one hitting the tree about 2 feet above my friends fathers's head (sitting in a tree stand) I've never seen him move so fast, but we all took cover in a little gully while yelling at the shooter. I'm sure he didn't hear us, but it was not a good feeling.

One a side note, when I was 15 I was walking thru the woods and it happened to be during archery season. I didn't realize that it was at the time tho. Anyways, I was walking around when I heard someone say they could have shot me. I turned and saw a kid, 1 yr older then my, holding his bow and arrow, fully cocked? and had it pointed directly at my chest. Made me mad and scared at the same time (this kid was not a stable person). He ended up putting it down and I went on my way...back on the road for me. I never did tell anyone that at the time, I guess I was afriad of possible retaliation. (should have called the game warden or state police) He's probably in prison now, but I digress...

43 years ago today, May 3rd, 1969, my two best friends and I were in the Western Union office on Capitol in Houston when an armed robber entered. He had us climb over the counter to get behind it.

For those not from Houston, this was only about a half mile from the main police station. A passing patrol car saw what was happening and in a very few minutes, 10-15 officers burst through the door.

Some jumped up on the counter and when the BG didn't drop his gun, began shooting. We had all reached relatively safe cover (I was behind a refrigerator) but my buddy caught a piece of police shrapnel through his calf (he was under a desk with a female employee).

The manager suffered busted ear drums, but was not shot. The BG had, IIRC, 31 entrance wounds. I actually obtained a copy of the case file but it's lost now.

It was immediately after this that the partition was installed from the counter to the ceiling.

Haven't been in one, but I watched one recently. Left me more PO'd than anything.

Closest I've come to being in one was having a couple of 12 gauge rounds go over my head while surveying some land in central TX. Again, more ticked off than anything

I surely hope I never find out, but I was just a teenager when someone shot a bunch of rounds off at the barn I was in. They were just driving down the road and shooting at stuff I think. It's unlikely they even knew the barn was occupied. The car stopped up on the road and the rounds started flying through the metal sheeting all round me. I hit the deck and crawled behind a metal plow in the barn. Apparently after the mag was empty, they decided to move on and sped off. I was scared silly while it was happening, then I was furious. I felt like I could have beat the snot out of them single handed. It was dark so I couldn't even give a description of any kind to anyone. To this day, I don't like being in sight of cars passing at night. I'm always aware anyone in the car with a gun can decide I look like good target practice.....and I'm a bigger target than I was back then

How does it feel? Like very high-speed shooting practice while peering through a toilet-roll and a little guy yelling inside your brain that you're supposed to be panicking.

Afterwards, like absolute, total crushing victory.

Yes, we do. I wore my extra mags on my chest, attached to my IBA with a Molle vest.The compartments for each mag were subdivided, so it was really easy to stash the empty mags when you were switching out. If things are moving too fast to do that, you can always cram them in your cargo pocket--
