Yes, hence the 10 year vacation reference in the title. IIRC, there are some oddball exceptions like manufacturing the gun for yourself, but most certaInly buying a modern commercial firearm without a serial number is illegal.

...would the crime be in the buying of it or, more likely, in the dealer transferring it to the buyer...I think the dealer's on the hook...but it's probable that the new buyer'd lose his purchase to the evidence locker...

I have another question.

If someone were to bring in a firearm and it's obvious that the serial number had been defaced, are they to seize the firearm and contact authorities or do they let the gun walk back out with purchasing it and then informing the authorities about the firearm?

Up for bid is this pre owned Smith And Wesson Model 59 Semi Automatic 9mm. It's being sold AS-IS because the serial number has been shaved off, I'm not 100% sure it fires and it does not come with a clip.
Bid is only $21.00. Guy I know reported this to Gunbroker Customer Service, so this listing may "expire".
I think I would have reported it to their State Police and whoever regulates pawn shops there.
When in doubt

Oh, I reported it to the Columbus Police gun unit while a friend of mine was reporting it to the Columbus Police pawn shop unit.

Oh, and Jim reported it to gunbroker:

I recall a movie on TV once about a man and his sons forming some rebel militia type group and buying guns and removing serial numbers and the Govt was unhappy and showed him and his group what consequences are, but I don't recall the name of the movie. Searching Google was no help.
