Rust And Pitting

I hate to admit this, but last night while cleaning some guns I found a shotgun I forgot I had. I decided to wipe it down and make sure I had it logged into my inventory.

I was ashamed It had rust spots and pitting. It was not bad, but I want to stop it and possibly repair it the best I can.

Can anyone give some suggestions such as oil, buffing, or cleaning to stop the rust from spreading?

A few years ago, my mother gave me my first .22 rifle, a Winchester 9422. Unfortunately, it had been sitting under her bed, cased, for about 15 years without being touched. It had a tone of surface rust and light pitting. I had it media blasted and duracoated. While it doesn't have the beautiful deep bluing that it once had, it is now clean, serviceable and protected. I'd try some oil and 0000 brass or bronze wool. If the areas aren't large you can spot with cold blue after removing the rust. Pits would have to be buffed out if not too deep but that definitely removes bluing. If it's a valuable weapon maybe a refinish and rebluing.

I will take some before and after photos. I have never used the cold bluing I will be interesting to see how it works.

I tried cold bluing on the .22, and it was...awful. I hope you have better luck than me! IIRC, I only paid around $80 for the Duracoating, so it wasn't too expensive.

I am +1 on seeing Dale Hunicutt at Grip Reductions. My M&P was on its second slide and take down lever in less than 18 months because I must have corrosive sweat. The Finish was coming off inside the holster, pitted and rusting; even though I was wiping it down every night.

Dale did a great job, less than $80, and quick turnaround.

Minor rust can be removed by rubbing with Blue Wonder Gun Cleaner. I use it on ultra fine Scothbrite pads since they say steel wool leaves residue.
