CHL Instructor Qualification - Revolver

New to the Forum! Admins - Thanks for providing it! Question regards revolver portion of CHL Instructor Qual. The only revolver I own or have shot for 10 years is my Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44mag. I'm accurate and proficient with it. MUST I use a double-action revolver in qualification? Do I have to draw from leather with that revolver? I'll be comfortable doing whatever they ask, but not sure at all what qual course of fire for instructors is at all! Thanks in advance for answers!

Your Super Blackhawk should be just fine others have shot single action revolvers and done fine. Use .44 Special ammo rather than Magnum your hand and wrist will thank you. I'm not sure if they even allow magnum ammo. They do not allow reloads or, aluminum cases and it's a lost brass range.

From a logistical standpoint, borrowing a .38 might be better because of the ammo cost.

All shooting is from low ready just like the CHL qualification. Same course of fire.

COF is the same as CHL. The passing score is higher and instructors have to qualify SA and NSA, but the COF is the same.

I don't see anything in the administrative rules that prohibit a single action revolver, but I may have missed something.

Per the rules I received you should be OK. They will not allow push off on single action is the only requirement. That is usually a S&W thing and don't think the Ruger can be 'pushed off'.

As for caliber, they do not specify no magnum, so I would guess it is OK. I would email the DPS instructors contact to ask. However, if they allow it and you are in my class, please stand away from me on the range.

If I were you borrow a semi-auto to shoot the course, then you may carry ether semi or wheelgun ( revolver for the young ones). If you shoot a wheelgun you may only carry a wheelgun. Do your qualification then carry what you are good with.

As far as it being a lost brass range - I believe your brass is only lost if it hits the ground. Our revolver brass has always gone directly from the pistol to the pocket, and I have never heard anything about it.

We are discussing instructor qualification. Instructors must qualify with both.

As I remember from my Jan. 2012 class, it is only "lost" if it hits the ground, and really, I think more of a "don't let brass picking slow down qualification" policy. Certainly if you hold/retain your revolver brass they're fine with it...even if you are getting other (non-reloaders) to retain their brass for you :)

We were told specifically how they prefer you to handle your revolver brass if you're keeping it (dump the empties on your barrel as you reload).

We had some SA folks in our class qualify, so it's no problem, and I can confirm that the "push off" requirement is indeed a DA (typically S&W) thing--specifically if a DA revolver's cocking notch is worn/filed down to the point that it won't retain the hammer it's not acceptable (This does *NOT* preclude a double-action-only modification). I've only seen that on guns that are severly worn out or improperly "smithed," and trust me--they all had OTHER issues as well.
