reasons to always be armed when legal

I found these in the police reports of the Abilene paper today and they further reinforced why I carry a gun and I thought they were worth sharing.

Drive-by shooting

Abilene Police reported someone drove down Clinton Street just after 11 p.m. Sunday and fired several shots into a home in the 1500 block of the street. No one was injured. Six people were home at the time of the shooting. Numerous rounds hit the residence and a vehicle parked in front of the house. Police suspect the shooting was aimed at the car's owner, who was visiting friends at the home. A witness told police they saw a small, dark-colored pickup leaving the scene. By Monday afternoon, the case had not yet been assigned to a police detective. The shooting remains under investigation.

Dog attack

Abilene Police reported a 13-year-old boy was attacked by a pit bull Monday night in the 5300 block of Taos Street. Abilene Police Officer George Spindler said the dog was on the loose when it mauled the boy.
''We contacted the dog's owner and confiscated the animal,'' Spindler said. He said the boy's mother took him to the hospital. The incident is still under investigation.

This reminds me of scenarios going through my head today while on a smoke break at work... (i work 11pm-8am)

As I was standing there, 2 dogs (1 doberman, and the other looked to be a bulky-ish golden retriever mix) come roaming down the street, apparently escaped from their yard. They take notice of me, but decide to keep moving.

As it happens I'm running scenarios through my head of what I would do if one were to attack me, or someone else walking to work (lots of people walk in this neighborhood). More than one of those scenarios end in my having to shoot a dog. Unfortunately, the powers that be at work have told me I can't carry, in a wonderfully reactionary and uninformed manner. *sigh*

Still waiting on the CHL, but even once I do, it's rather useless in such a situation for it to be locked up in the car.

glad to see I am not the only night worker here and I know what you mean about not being able to carry at work NcongruNt I work at an airport so mine stays in the truck unless I think I might have to enter the secure zone with the truck (shelter from weather) then it stays at home. I normaly carry OC to discourage dog attacks when I am spending time outside but if I were to catch 1 actively attacking a person especially a kid I would be inclined to shoot it to insure it never attacked again

Isnt this a situation where you shouldn't shoot back. It just seems that with adrenaline going and a moving object you are more than likely going to cause more damage to property or people behind the target than the target itself. Then again during the actual battle I don't know how I would react to someone shooting at me and I hope that no one else here would have to go through that either. I am a newbie to conceal carry so any input from the more experienced members on how they would handle this would be great.

IMO, being armed in this circumstance is of no real value....as I would not be seeking to shoot back.

Some situations can not be predicted or avoided. In this case (drive by shooting), simply laying on the floor (making yourself a smaller target) or seeking hardcover, is about all you can do.

I am sure glocklvr's intent was to show that "bad things happen", and that being prepared to deal with it...is not unwise. A different example may have better served his purpose, but I certainly understand what he was getting at.

One phrase Flint taught me a couple of yrs ago is:
"Your gun is not ALWAYS the best response to an assault."
This is an excellent example.
Sometimes the best response is, as said, take cover. I dont want to fight a rifle at 40 yds w/ my 1911. I am no SGT York.

Yeah I understood his intent also and I apologize if I made it sound like it shouldnt have been posted. I am glad that Glocklvr posted that since it does bring up questions newbies like myself might have with certain scenerios. The more information we have to arm ourselfs the better prepared we are if, god forbid, we find ourselfs in a similiar situation.

Its all a part of learning a mindset that you alone can apply to a level or comfortzone that only comes with time, practice, talking shop...

Just because you got a gun, doesn't mean you get a free bowl of soup with that either...

As far as I am concerned, and I am by no means an expert in anything, there is not such thing as a stupid question or comment...

I may scratch my head from time to time, but I'll give anyone the benefit of the doubt and try to find out the context and reason behind it so anyone can come up with a good comment or idea to help anyone here...

I've been floating around these gun forums for years...A lot longer I suppose than I should...And this website by far is the most productive, interactive and mature I have ever come across...It has the best mix of topics and hardware discussions I have ever seen...

Its not about any one member/participant either...Everyone has an equal stake in its success or failure, and I have yet, and do not anticipate really anything making this website a failure...Its not in the nature of the participants here...

And we keep drawing more and more in here everyday...

I'll cetainly plop down some money for Charles to increase bandwidth or some other aspect of keeping this place going...
