Our SWAT guys and many of our officers run one round low in all their mags. 99% chance that there would never be an issue when full, but why risk it when the Glock carries so many. I think creep would be the major factor relevant to the topic, not cyclical loading/fatigue.

And given that there's a lot of factors that come into play that I haven't seen hard data on ( spring design, materials, temperature ) as well as gun operating conditions and loss of spring force required to induce a malfunction.

I'm not trying to contradict you, just introduce another topic.

For the record: I don't think spring creep would be an issue within a person's lifetime. I just haven't seen numbers on it.

I shoot my carry ammunition every few months, and replace it with fresh.

So, I know the ammunition is still okay,

I know that it functions well in my pistol,

I become more familiar with where it shoots (point of aim), and feels like in recoil.

I have started doing this after I a friend mentioned that maybe chambering the same round over and over again.

Heck, if you're even remotely worried, buy some extra mag springs and replace them once a year. 1911 mag springs are 3 for $18 or 10 for $48 from Wolff.

I agree that creep is relevant to the topic. I believe that would fall under JFrog's statement about making sure the springs are used within the design parameters.

There have also been several threads where people have expressed concern about wearing out magazine springs by repeated cycles of loading and unloading. I think that Jumping Frog was also trying to address both of these issues.

I would like to add another two cents.

JFrog makes the point that a spring must be well made and properly designed.
I would like to point out that part of the design and manufacture of well made springs require a proper heat treatment of the wire to meet the design requirements. Many incidences of "weak springs" can be contributed to an error in the heat treating process. Note that storing magazines or springs in "hot" environments [eg 150F] is not a hot enough temperature to affect the properties of the spring.

I'm with you on that one. I haven't tried, but many things firearms related are blocked by my employers firewall. Besides, they don't need to know where I go on the interweb anyway.
