For a Hispanic it would be:

Race: White
Ethnicity: Hispanic

At least this is LE treats it in my experience. Some forms have H as a race, but not most.

Close enough - 'Hispanic' really means of Spanish and/or Portugese and of the colonies settled by those nations. The word relates back to 'Hispania' - the old country - and the new world of Hispaniola - the first place settled by Spain. Latino (male), Latina (female), is someone whose ancestry is more identified with the Latin American countries of this hemisphere and may be (more than a little likely) someone of Native and Hispanic ancestry - or African and Hispanic. Someone from Spain or Portugal will be quick to tell you that they are not 'Hispanic' nor 'Latina(o)'. Just to add fuel here - the term 'Caucasian' comes from the use of the Caucasus Mountains as the dividing line between Caucasian (white) on the west and the 'others' to the east. Except it was originally defined as the line between the Russias on the north and the Muslim countries to the south. Makes me proud to be Balkan/Greek...we never fight about such stuff ;-) !

Divided Attention wrote:As far as I know all "federal and state" forms now have ethnicity and race questions. It is very confusing for some people. Used to be hispanic was under race, but now it is separated out and all the races are either "hispanic or non-hispanic". Don't konw what this is supposed to do for census info, but figure someone's brother in law got paid to design new forms, and then someone's cousin for printing them.... :banghead:

The demographic pages for hospitals and public schools now have this type of ethnicity question.
I like nachos and tacos, and my grandmother is Castillian Spanish, so I guess I'm hispanic from now on

Remember: It's not illegal if they can't prove otherwise :thumbs2:
If your grandmother was Castilian, I would guess that makes you as Hispanic as anyone may have claim to be. I traveled to Spain (on Uncle Sam's dime) one time many years ago, and found it to be a little different than I had imagined. I ended up serving as the VERY un-official interpreter for the enlisted folks while "enjoying the nightlife", with my South Texas patchwork Tex-Mex Spanish. I never did get the habit of "lisping" my Cs, though (such as saying theenco for cinco).

Why should the people with Spanish names be angry? They get their own category. People with English, Polish, Chinese, Italian, Russian, Korean, French, German, and other last names all get lumped together. That discriminates against our ethnic diversity! :waiting:

Forget about the new form... read paragraph two of the cover letter:

"DOJ determined that the prohibition imposed on certain nonimmigrant aliens from receiving or possessing firearms or ammunition that have a connection to interstate commerce does not extend to all nonimmigrant aliens present in the United State, but only extends to aliens who were admitted to the United States under a nonimmigrant visa."

Take out all the legalese and double-talk and it says: "DOJ determined that the prohibition imposed on nonimmigrant aliens from receiving or possessing firearms or ammunition does not extend to all nonimmigrant aliens, but only extends to aliens who were admitted to the United States under a nonimmigrant visa."

In other words, if you are a nonimmigrant alien here without a visa, i.e. illegally, you are not subject to the prohibition!

Somewhat similar heritage here. Not sure of percentages but here goes:

AKA, 100% American. :thumbs2:

Not necessarily. Race could be Black if they're like A-Rod. Someone from Manila with a Spanish family name would be an Asian Hispanic and I guess that makes a Spanish speaking Mayan a Native American Hispanic.

Or maybe we should go back to Spain's Casta system. http://i.imgur.com/8UvAt.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My mother-in-law grew up in Kenya as a missionary kid. She lived there until she was 19.
Today, on all opportunities, she checks "African-American". I wonder what would happen on this form? She could more correctly argue that she's more African American than most who would check that box.

The new 4473 form has TWO separate boxes for Ethnicity and Race. Box 10a has two check boxes, "Hispanic or Latino" and "Not Hispanic or Latino." Box 10b has 5 different check boxes for race. I have no idea why this change was made.

why is race, ethnic background or anything like that on the form to begin with?

The list of questions should be short:

# is you a citizen or a foreign national legally residing here?
# do you promise to uphold and protect the constitution?
# is you a bad guy or not?

# sign and date

So in Arizona Sheriff Joe is on trial for profiling, but if you ask the Question on a Federal Form it's not .
I'm in South Texas 86% of the people here are hispanic or Latino, most are US Citizens or Legal Permanent Residents, but then you got a bunch that aren't, and we got our share of problems being this close to the Border
It is said that if you line up all the cars in the world end-to-end, someone would be stupid enough to try to pass them

With a family name like Arpaio he doesn't exactly sound like a WASP.

No government in the world operates on that level of logic.
