Was I overcautious (driving though Air Force/Navy land)?

I'm visting Florida. I made sure to read as much as I could about carrying here. I drove to Florida so I also checked the laws of LA, MS & AL. I also checked Georgia since I'm flying back and my flight will go through there and I wanted to be sure just in case I was bumped from my flight in Atlanta (my weapon will be unloaded and locked in my checked luggage). But the one thing I didn't think of until this morning was military bases. I drove to Valparaiso to pick someone up from the airport. Valparaiso is surrounded by land that is owned by the Navy & Air Force. We never drove past any signs that showed we were entering the base (and I was pretty sure we wouldn't having driven that route many times before prior to getting my CHL). But because I was going to be driving through such a large section of land that I knew to be owned by the military, I chose to leave my gun locked up where I'm staying. This land area is huge and several state & national highways run though it. I don't believe its considered part of Eglin Airforce Base, but I wasn't sure. So, does anyone know if it would have been ok to drive though it carrying my weapon?

Is it even possible to just drive through any military base, post, or fort without going through a gate or some kind of checkpoint? I wouldn't think so.

Yes and no..

Garrison land will be fenced and gated. But training land is often open.. There are many acres of military land in Texas that are not fenced.. Same with every large post I've been stationed at, Fort Richardson and Wainwright AK, Fort Jackson SC, Fort Benning GA, Fort Lewis WA, Fort Ord CA, FT Bragg NC..ect ect.

Many military bases have public routes or roads through them. In general, If it is not gated and access controlled, so long as you stay on the road.. State laws are what you adhere to for the most part. Though often you'll see signs stating you are crossing federal land or military property and are subject to search at any time.. or warning to stay on the public road, or like warnings to head.
