Looking at it another way...
It was a horribly bad move to turn in anything to a gun buy back program. Yes, I know the money went to a great cause. The problem is it lets city leaders claim their program was a rousing success, taking hundreds of firearms off the streets of Chicago. Many people will take that statement at face value and foolishly support more buy backs in the future. Their success metric is simply "numbers" nothing more; this action contributed to the success of the buy back. Plus of course the wasteful expenditure of city funds (provided through taxes).

I get what you're saying, but there is a documented history of folks running "gun buy backs" trotting out weapons from the PD armory, downright lying about the number of guns turned in, etc to make them look like a success. No matter how many guns had been turned in, they would have marketed it to the press as an outstanding success....because they're liars. If the numbers weren't good they would have made them up anyway.

If you look at the guns turned in, I don't think a single one of them was worth the money they got from the buyback. This money was then used by honest folks to pass on the shooting sports to the next generation, with anti gun money. That's a win in my book.
