Here's an interesting blog post regarding a fella who had stored his TEOTWAWKI ammo hoard in a trailer on his property, which then suffered a flood. There are interesting pictures of rusty steel cased ammo, and other problems.

Can't say I have much respect for his intended use of the possibly defective ammo- "trade fodder" (remind me never to trade ammo . . . ).

I lost a lot of brass and some ammo in Ike. Ended up tossing most of it. Didn't even think of it as 'trade fodder'. Wouldn't think of 'trading' defective ammo or brass. I think I gave some of the brass to a friend who reloads, but he knew the story on it. Think he ended up using it for some one-time low power target loads and that was it.

that would stink. Our house is the highest point in our street, so it would have to be one heck of a flood to get to us. Still, goes to show that just setting aside food/water/ammo doesn't mean you're prepared and disaster can strike in unusual ways.

It shows the importance of storing up ammo, period. I'm not so sure that I would reject the notion of selling the compromised ammo to "pilgrims," so long as it was sold with the admonition that "this ammo has been soaked and dried out, and about 25% of the time will fail to ignite. Do not rely on it for self defense," and it's trade value is set 25% lower than it might otherwise have been set. That seems fair.

People who themselves have not made the effort to prepare for disaster are in no position to complain if they cannot have their cake and eat it too after the disaster has fallen. A commensurate lowered trade value accompanied by an honest warning seems like a pretty fair deal for someone who has no ammo at all and desperately needs some........unless the seller is moved to charity enough to dispense from his personal stash.....which of course will have an impact on his own survival odds.
