Advice on a new .22 pistol

I will wholeheartedly recommend a ruger mark III or 22/45.

I have a 22/45. I recently put in a volquartsen trigger kit into it. 2.5 lbs and is an absolute dream to shoot.

I might need to look into this.

Edit: Although I don't think the stock 22/45 trigger is too bad.

I just got back from the range I took three Rugers, My Kimber Custom TLE II, My XDm40, and my Savage MKII TRR-SR. I planned to take the SR22 pistol but forgot it in the safe. Regarding the Rugers I started out with my Standard (Think Mark I without the target sights, longer barrel, and better trigger). Then I shot the 22/45 MK III, and finally I moved into the 22/45 LITE, and I was disapointed when I realized I didn't put the SR22 into the range bag. Overall, out of those three and the SR22, I prefer the Standard now that I got it running right (late 60s vintage, and I was probably the first person to ever clean it when I got it in 2009). In all honesty you can't go wrong with the Rugers or any quality handgun made by a major name brand. If you were in my neck of the woods I'd let you shoot mine but I suspect your not in West Texas.

No, I'm in Richmond south of Houston. Thanks for the generous offer though. This has all been really good advice and thanks again for the comments.

I've shot an old 1980 MKIII ruger, and I wasn't too fond of he grip angle. However, I've held a 22/45 and a 22/45 Lite and liked them both.

So far, I'm really drawing partial to the Sig 1911 .22 in FDE. We will see. I'm going to a local gun show tomorrow and hopefully between all the vendors all the potential guns will be there. So we shall see...

Sig 1911 in .22 sounds like a fun gun. Sig Mosquito is not so great. I'm sure some folks love theirs, but every one I've shot or seen someone else shoot is a jam-o-matic. Sig makes some very nice pistols...but the Mosquito isn't one of them.

That is why I suggested the Ruger. Don't get me wrong, my Sig P239 is as reliable as they come, but in my experience, the Mosquito is not. I don't have any experience with Sig .22s.

One of my favorite .22LR Autos is the High Standard. IMO, they are one of the best .22LR pistols available.

That Victor's a great one, but typically costs $700+.

For that kind of money I'd stay with a Smith M41.


For a few hundred, my choice is still the Ruger SR22.

Nice, used M41's sell by the dozen in the $700 range.

But I didn't think the OP was inquiring about $700 rimfires.

I figured that the discussion of $200-400 Rugers and Sig .22LR had run it's course. There are others in the price range, such as the Browning Buckmark, which wasn't mentioned.

I was just trying to expand the horizons of some of the members by suggesting something out of the ordinary. Due to your prior threads, I knew that you appreciate some of the "finer and not so ordinary" handguns so I thought I would suggest another. Prior to your post, I am sure that many of the readers did not even consider the S&W M41 or the High Standard. There is something to be said for owning one High Standard vs. two "lower grade" firearms.

It's not the best when you're trying to shoot quarter sized holes at 17 ft.

It really helped me. Especially the overtravel adjustment.

What is it about the Browning Buckmark or S&W M41 or the High Standard that make them so much fun? Just curious. I own a High Standard M4, and I love it. And also since its stamped being local here in Houston, TX. So, can yall elaborate on those three some more? Really more to the "fun" aspect of them, over the ruger choice.
