Clean under heat shield

Post by newTexan »

Hey guys,

Tiny little question. How often should/do you clean the outside of the barrel under the heat shield on your AR-15?

Thanks!

Rarely, The handguards keep most stuff off the barrel. Unless my AR gets rained on or something like that I don't hassle with taking the handguards off. :tiphat:

You mean the barrel shroud?

A special cloth you wrap your old dead barrel in before burial. :thumbs2:

Just for my own education, I was told that "heat shield" and "barrel shroud" were both correct terms. Was I wrong on that?

If you look for AR parts you won't find a part called "heat shield" or "barrel shroud" you will however find a part called "handguard." It's the whole "clip/magazine" "Bullet/Ammo" "Case/casing" thing. We know what you mean. There's no real benefit to pulling them off to clean under them more than once or twice a year. Even with a proper delta ring tool it's a pain in the neck.

Thanks! I apprecaite knowing the correct terminology. It may not "matter" for communication, but to me it's still good to understand all the correct terms. It shows respect for the subject matter.

My Browning watercooled .30 has something that looks like it might be called a barrel shroud.
