A week at the range!

Well I've been at the range all week. So far I've shoot 1500 rounds of .40, about 50 rounds of 12 guage 00 buck and slugs, and about 50 rounds of .223.

I had never shot a .40 caliber hand gun before Monday. I was a little concerned about recoil, but it hasn't been bad. I'm shooting the Glock 22. We have worked on a lot of acuracy drills, low light drills, and shooting and moving drills.

The .223 was fun. We had both a semi-auto AR-15 and a full auto M-4. Of course I like the full auto. It was a little scarry though, the range master put a couple of body armor vests down range and we shot them. The rounds went through without even slowing down. They even went through the steel trauma plates.

I go back in the morning for one more day and final qualification with the shotgun and pistol.

I know the armor that we were issued when I went to Iraq would stop a 7.62 round but not a 5.56. I am not a bullet expert, but it was something about the speed of the round.

It's also the shape and cross section. A 7.62mm bullet has roughly 37% more frontal area than a 5.56mm bullet.

Even if the energy is identical, an icepick penetrates a lot better than a hammer.

I heard that it takes speed to cut metal at the John Linebaugh seminar last year.

I don't have a problem with the .40, I got used to it, and agree it seems to have a bit more "umph" when you loose one of those downrange...I shoot the G23, and over the years of carrying and shooting that have gotten quite comfortable with it...I believe it just takes time and practice to get used to something like this...Everyone is different...

YMMV...And shooting that G22, I would think the frame size of the handgun helps a lot in how you wrap around getting used to a caliber and the way you shoot it...

Ironically, she likes pretty much all of the other calibers she has shot before, that are all around that one caliber...(.380, 9mm, .45)

She really loved shooting Charles' Les Baer "Thunder Ranch" .45 that one time at the first PSC day...I thought my wallet was a gonner after that...

Glad you have gotten a lot of time at the range this week...
