Moved from NY
I recently moved to Texas from NY where I have a CHL, do I have to take the course for a Texas CHL?
Re: Moved from NY
Welcome to the forum. Yes, to get a Texas CHL you need to take the course. There are many instructors on the forum who can give you information. What area/city are you living?robbyg1 wrote:I recently moved to Texas from NY where I have a CHL, do I have to take the course for a Texas CHL?
I just looked at the DPS website and apparently Texas does honor the NY carry permit.

I still recommend getting the Texas CHL.

I'm living in Burnet now.

WELCOME !!!!robbyg1 wrote:I'm living in Burnet now.
Welcome to the city you can almost walk across. Where 30.06 signs don't exist (I had to go to Round Rock to see one)

Welcome to the forum too.

NOTE: If you go in to pay your utility bill, there is no sign at the Burnet Municipal office saying there's a Courtroom inside and a cashier for the Court .... but there is.... I get mine auto-deducted from my bank, so I don't go in there.
I got the non-compliant sign removed from the County Property Tax office on the Square, but there is an Court Annex on the Square; and don't even take a knife in the big COUNTY court annex building on 29 where the DPS and License Plate tax appraiser office is. (metal detectors)
Most at my Burnet church took the class here http://www.touringtexas.com/guns/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Later ... I'm late for church

Do not pre-load your magazines; he'll tell you how many rounds to load each portion of the course.

Welcome to Texas and welcome to the forum from someone that escaped from NY back in '83. I lived in Orange County, in lower upstate, from 1979 until 1983 when I joined the Navy.
You must have been either a LEO or one of Mayor Doomberg's body guards if you had a NY CHL.
I hear those are hard to come by for the average citizen.

I am not and have never been a LEO. My avatar is in honor of my friend, Dallas Police Sargent Michael Smith, who was murdered along with four other officers in Dallas on 7.7.2016.

I just wanted to point out that a NY permit to own a handgun isn't the same as a CHL carry permit. Many people still believe that you need a permit to own a gun in Texas.C-dub wrote:Welcome to Texas and welcome to the forum from someone that escaped from NY back in '83. Re: Moved from NY
Then what is a NY CHL? The OP said he had a NY CHL, but wanted to know if he needed to get a Texas CHL, so I thought that meant the same or nearly the same thing. Or is it like IL's FOID card?WildBill wrote:I just wanted to point out that a NY permit to own a handgun isn't the same as a CHL carry permit. I wasn't responding to the OP. I was trying to give some general information. Sorry for the confusion.C-dub wrote:Then what is a NY CHL? Okay. I thought I had it confused and that a NY CHL was merely permission to own a gun in NY.WildBill wrote:I wasn't responding to the OP. I was trying to give some general information. Sorry for the confusion.

Welcome to the Forum. My dad had the good sense to move here from Queens when my twin brother and I were 6 mos old, so I'm just 1/2 a year shy of being native.
My mother and both my older and younger brothers are Native Texans. Best of luck to you getting your Tex CHL. What do you carry?

Re: Moved from NY
It depends. There are licenses that allow purchase and possession at home. There are licenses that allow carry. There are flavors in between. A friend from my misspent youth lives on Manhattan island and has a carry license, but he is very comfortable financially and knows how to play the game.C-dub wrote:Okay. I sincerely apologize to anybody I offended by suggesting the Second Amendment also applies to The People who don't work for the government.
