What's a good .22lr pistol?
Hey guys,
I'm thinking of getting a pistol in .22lr for cheap practice and to help ease the little lady at home into shooting. Anyone have a recommendation or advice on one to avoid?
Thanks!

These are decent. Fairly inexpensive as far as pistols go.

I thoroughly love my Ruger Mark III 22/45
Note, the Ruger will take about any 22LR rounds
My brother in law has a nice Walther P22, but he put the extended barrel on it for more accurate target shooting.
Note, the P22 with the standard barrel only likes CCI ammuntion, with the long barrel, it will eat the bulk (cheaper stuff)

If you want to make her really not mind it get a can as well. there are some really decent .22 cans on the market right now in the $200-300 range.

I've been told the Bersa Thunder in .22 is a good gun. I like the Browning Buckmark.

Buckmark or Ruger both have been around forever and both are solid reliable guns. I've had a few dealings with the SIGs and Walthers they are OK but have a few problems.

My wife and I both have Ruger SR22s and they have been flawless. They eat all the .22LR we have fed them without any failures. I paid $300 out the door for each one.

Not sure where you are located, but this is a great price if you are in the Houston area.
This gun, with the long barrel, new, is about $450

Oh, and I am in no way affiliated with this seller, I actually considered buying it, but cant justify another weapon to my wife, yet!

I've got to slow down reading these posts. At first, I read it as "can't justify another wife, yet."Teamless wrote:Not sure where you are located, but this is a great price if you are in the Houston area.

Stay away from the Beretta Neos U22s. They have a problem with the extractor parts falling out. I have replaced mine once after several thousand rounds and need to replace it again after about 100 rounds. If you do a search you will find this is a common problem.

Re: What's a good .22lr pistol?
I've heard mostly bad things about the Sig Mosquito. Sig QC went through a really rough patch in the 90s when they moved some manufacturing stateside and changed some things (milled slides vs stamped). On their P22x series of guns, I think they've worked that out with a change of extractor. A lot of their polymer framed guns have spotty reputations as well. Sig Sauer used to command a higher price point, but they have dropped like a rock in the last 5 years for their polymer guns. The mosquito specifically - I have been told by a dealer that his wife gave him one and he had nothing but trouble with it. He called Sig Customer Service and they told him to try lubricating the ammo!
I've heard a few other people more recently say good things about the mosquito, so maybe they've worked that out.
I have a Browning Buckmark Camper which is NOT 100% reliable. That is supposedly rare for Buckmarks. For me, Federal bulk ammo occasionally takes a nose dive on the ramp and bends the projectile (soft lead) and does not chamber. Buckmarks and Ruger Mk III are the usual standard bearers for reliability in the .22LR pistol category.
I just bought a Ruger SR22. I'm hoping that its ability to eat all kinds of ammo exceeds the Buckmark.
