.223 or .308

Post by Cjwglock19 »

About to buy my first AR. I hunt with .308. Any thoughts on a which is a better caliber for an AR?

What .308 do you have? What is the use/purpose of the new AR?

5.56 is much cheaper to shoot. AR10's have never interested me. the only 7.62 rifles I have are hk 51/hk 91and rem 700.

What are you going to use it for?

I like the AR platform in 5.56mm and 7.62 Ruskie but I think there are better semi-auto platforms for 7.62x51 NATO.
When in doubt
Vote them out!

As one who has both 5.56 and 7.62 ARs, I'd say get whichever one makes you happy. Both have traits to recommend them.

5.56 can kill pretty much anything in Texas if you have good shot placement, and most of what it kills, it will actually leave more meat intact.

If you are going to build an AR15, might I recommend you get a good barrel, and good trigger group.

My barrel recommendations are always from http://www.whiteoakarmament.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; choose what length you want, and gas port length. Just make sure you get a 1:7 twist and a wylde chamber.

That depends entirely on what you plan on using the gun for.

My first AR (if I ever get around to building it) will be a 5.56 gun. After that we may get crazy. :biggrinjester:

I have enough AKs, its time to add an AR or three.

AR-15s are like 1911s - you can't have just one :-)

start with one in 5.56 and work up from there....

Yikes!!!!!

I found a math formula that will help you get more of the guns you want. I know what you are thinking.... a math formula will help me get guns? yeah right. But check it out (I know it works from first hand experience) :

When Wife = zero,
Monthly Gun budget = current budget +(current (manicure+pedicure²) + waxing + hair salon visits + Womens clothes + wife food + $3000misc)

When wife = 1,
Monthly gun budget = $29.64 + nagging^
