Deception does help you win a battle or war. However, JFK also had our UN Ambassador pull out some photos at a critical moment to prove that we knew they had missiles in Cuba, which helped to prevent war.

The ocean is a pretty big place, and we have a lot of coastline so it's certainly not impossible for this to happen. But like many others have said, if I had to place a bet, I would lean towards them being monitored and trailed for the duration of their "visit." Akulas are quiet for Russian subs... but they are still Russian subs

On a related note, add me to the list of former bubbleheads in the thread. I was an EM1(SS) on the USS Cincinnati and USS Hartford.

There are buoys in the gulf that measure wave action, tide, & temperature, so it's not a stretch to assume that there are also sentinel buoys.

If I remember correctly, (and there's a good probability I don't), I saw that movie with my grandmother. I seem to recall that she didn't like it. She didn't think the Russians were fools or idiots, and that portraying them that way was foolish of us. I think she saw communists under every bush. She thought the same of "Hogan's Heroes".

When I was in the Navy back in the late 60's and early 70's, we could tell you when a Russian sub pulled out of the harbor in Cuba or when it cleared the coastline in the North Sea. There was no place in the Atlantic or Pacific that the Russians could hide from us. I'm pretty sure present technology is better. The technology we used is not even secret any more.

Now all we need is for the Obama-idiots to talk about how we knew the whole time that they were there, and how we knew, including pictures. That would be about par for their blabbermouth course.

I don't know if we did know or not, we will probably never find out. However someone parked a sub off the coast of LA sometime last year if I remember correctly and launched a missile. I do know for a fact we didn't not only know it was there, we don't know who it was. A friend's son is in the middle east, they said it was a show of force from an unknown enemy. He is SF and now works for one of the Generals over there. Never underestimate the enemy. I have trained with the Russians, they are not to be taken lightly.

It might not be too far off before we have drones tracking enemy subs. I remembered reading about these some time ago, but had to search for an article to post here.
