I picked up two boxes in .38Special +P by mistake about 5 years ago and it is still in my safe. I keep trying to remember to take it to the range, but keep forgetting it.

Personally, I only carry Federal HST +P or Hydra-Shok +P (in that order) depending on what's available and price.

IMHO, you get what you pay for in SD ammo. I would not intentionally buy or carry WWB Personal Protection ammo.

I have run several boxes of it through my 1911s. No feed problems or failures. Reasonably accurate. I bought mine at the local Academy where the clerk told me that hog hunters used a lot of it.

Edit to add: I carry either Hornady or my own loads of Barnes TAC-XP.

I kinda think that it's not what you shoot, it's where you put the shot. I don't think the military or law enforcement use all these wonderful loads. Center of Mass with anything from 9mm up will probably do the job.

Of course, but hollow points are an advantage. Hitting someone COM with JHP is going to cause more damage than FMJ. The military doesn't use them because of the Geneva Convention that said JHP caused too much damage and were inhumane, or something like that.

Our police do use these wonderful loads. Did you knot see where the IRS and Weather cops bought up several hundred thousand rounds of "deadly hollow point" rounds just recently?


I think I've shot a box of it when the regular target ammo was hard to find. I didn't have any problems.

I have a box-stock Springfield GI Model 1911...while the barrel has been made to aid feeding of hollowpoints, I found that it doesn't like any brand of ammo with sharp "shoulders" on the bullet...however, the WWB JHP (or Remington equivalent), having a more rounded profile like FMJ, feeds just fine. So, IF you can shoot better ammo in a 1911 that you carry, or use for home defense, do so...but if WWB JHP is all that feeds reliably in your 1911, then that is what you go with, IMHO.

It (RIA compact) will feed Gold Dots and Golden Sabres as well. I'm actually more concerned about gettting sufficient speed out of the 3" barrel, so I'm considering 185gr vs 230. The WWB-PP is rated at 880fps which is the 'never to be matched' factory spec which is probably at least a 5" barrel, so I may not break 800fps in the 3" barrel.

I've shot some of it. Went bang every time. Heck, even got hold of some Monarch .45 JHP from Academy a while back (never seen it since). It was 100% as well.

Would either be my 1st choice for carry ammo? Prolly not. Perfer HST.
Would I worry about carrying it if it was what I had? No. it works.

Interestingly, while the Winchester factory ammo is cheaper than Speer Gold Dot, the bullets themselves (for reloading) are the same price and the Winchester is 230gr only. The Speer Gold Dots are available in 185, 200, and 230gr.

I got some back when the ammo got real scarse. Feeds fine even in my 1911s. Someone above did say "went bang every time". I have one primer failure. Second strike & no different.
I will stick to Gold Dots, XTPs, or my favorite Win Rangers.

Anyone have an opinion on 185gr vs 230gr in a 3" 1911?
