Ruger American Rifle .... which Caliber ??
Ruger American Rifle .... which Caliber ??
Looking for some good solid advice........ i am going to be buying a Ruger American Rifle either tomorrow or tuesday and dont know what caliber to buy ???? i am leaning toward 30-06 but as this will be my everyday range rifle for target practice i dont want uncomfortable recoil ....... it comes in .243, .270 30-06 & .308 . i know that 30-06 have a reputation of kicking like a mule but unsure how the Ruger handles recoil ?
I have a benelli .300 WSM which i enjoy shooting ...... and believe me that kicks !! . I am a big caliber fan but want manageable recoil at the same time ....... advice welcome.

I am a big short action fan and the 08 family of cartridges are my favorite rifle rounds. I would go with .308, especially if you plan to shoot it quite a bit. If they introduce it in 7mm-08 I will probably get one.

Of those calibers you've listed, .243 would be the softest shooting, and it is a good descendant of the parent .308 Winchester cartridge. .270 recoil would be similar to the .308 and the .30-06. The .30-06 would give you the greatest range of bullet weights to play with, but the .308 isn't far behind. Personally, I'm a big fan of .308, partly because I like a short action, and party because it is just a really good design from an accuracy standpoint, etc. Of the four, .308 and .30-06 are probably the easiest to find in stores, although the other two are also very commonly available calibers. That said, any of those calibers would serve you well.

I have shot the Ruger All American in .30-06 and it does have some recoil although not unmanageable. .270 should be similar to the .30-06 while the .243 and .308 will be considerable less. My choice would be the .308 and the rifle is a very good in the All American.

I'm wondering, if he goes with .308, is that the same as 7.62? If it is and he has or is thinking about getting an AR he could get one in the same caliber and not need two different sets of ammo for the two rifles.

If you intend on using this rifle to hunt i would say 30-06, it is the most versatile in its available factory loaded ammo and the components available for reloading is never ending. The .308 is the most accurate of the calibers. As for the .243 and .270 are both excellent choices for hunting but not for just plinking , however the other two are less expensive to buy ammo for, not that any of them are pricey.
7.62 is the diameter of the bullet, 7.62x51 is .308win, 7.62x63 is 30.06(named for its caliber, 30, and the year it was adopted buy the U.S Military) , 6.8x65 is .270win, and 6mmx51 is .243win(anyone else seeing a pattern here).

If you are a grown man with no physical limitations then get anyone but the 243. If you shoot any reasonable game with any of the others they will never know the difference. If you shoot a lot of elk the 30:06 will shoot 180 and 200 grain bullets bfaster than a 308 will. I shoot a 308.
