New STG-44s

Post by 74novaman »

are being brought into the US by German Sport Guns.

What is an STG44? The original is commonly referred to as the first assault rifle, and its use on the eastern front probably inspired a Russian tanker by the name of Kalashnikov.

These guns are selling at ~$530 bucks on Buds, and are chambered for .22lr.

Some might dismiss it due to the .22 chambering, but I think its pretty brilliant.

.22 lets them not worry about many of the "evil features" that prohibit other guns from import.

In addition, there are far superior "assault rifles" chambered in both 5.56 and 7.62 already, so if this is going to be nothing but a range toy, it might as well be a cheap to use range toy, right?

Does it serve much of any practical purpose in a modern arsenal? No.

Do I want one? Oh yeah!!

Those are just way too cool. They just found a stash of the original German rifles over in the middle east. There were thousands of them. I was drooling looking at the pics of the originals stacked on top of each other.

RSJ linked a story about that event 2 posts above you.

Pretty crazy stuff. If you look through pictures of current troubles in Africa, you'll occasionally see an old STG-44 in there as well. Makes me wonder where they manage to find ammo.

I'd love for the story to come out someday of how 5,000 STG-44s wound up in Syria. I bet it would be an interesting tale.......

Either way I hope they keep making these .22 versions for a while. I may have to pick one up someday down the road.

I saw one of these at the gun show yesterday. I was really tempted even at $600. But the Arisaka got the better of me. It looked great. The wife would have shot me with it though.

I have seen many pictures of confiscated weapons courtesy of friends and family deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and in many of the pictures you will see Sturmgewehr 44s and even Mauser 98s, some in pristine condition.
