Greetings--
All you .223 shooters-- what prices are you seeing for bulk (500-1k round) of .223 ? Brand ? Location?
I usually purchase my pistol ammo at Academy, but all they have is Remington @ $ 12/20. THe folks there said no more Winchester :-( .
What about mail order-- wouldnt the shipping offset the savings ?
Thanks--
.223 prices in HOU or DFW areas ?

I tend to buy all my 223/5.56 off the web. I can usually find acceptable prices, and since I order >2k rounds at a time, the shipping cost can actually be less then sales tax in a store.
If you are willing to buy off the web, a good source to help you get started is ar15.com. They have an ammo section with a thread dedicated to current prices and availability. It's not always accurate, but it's a good place to get started in your search.
I buy mine packaged in boxes of 20. I've bought bulk packed before since the price is somewhat lower, but UPS isn't known for gently processing packages, and I had some damaged rounds. I haven't had the same problem with the boxed ammo.

Off the web is cheapest for .223 ususally
I got 1000 rounds of Wolf .223 for $189 delivered with no tax from ammoman.com. That is about the best around I could find. Quick deliver via UPS to your door.
BTW, it has not had a failure in several hundred rounds. My Mini14 does great with it, Ruger says no problem. I shoot it in IDPA-type carbine matches. The new polymer coating doesn't seem to foul or stick. I am VERY satisfied with it as range ammo. Now for home defense/anti personnel I use CorBon. For presision shooting at 100+ yards I would choose another ammo and another rifle but this works great for my purposes.
I hope this helps
