1891 Mauser

Post by AustinBoy »

So I just found out that my step-dad has an 1891 Argentine Mauser.

He wants me to have it.

This looks like an awesome gun!

Has anyone shot one before? Fun?

I assume I should have it checked out by a gunsmith before shooting it?

Thanks

Ammunition for it (if it is still in the original caliber of 7.65x53mm) is pretty much made only by European companies whose standards aren't the same as ours. It might be worth the money to have a 'smith look at it. Very nice, BTW.

7.65x53 Mauser is ballistically similar to 308 win. Inexpensive reload kits may be purchased from Lee Precision if you want to give that a try. Brass may be formed from 30/06. Trim to 2.10 and full length size. Having a smith check it out is not a bad idea. Attention needs to be given to the locking lugs. I would not fire hot loads in the 1891 as they are not considered as strong an action as the 1898 mauser. Always check and cross check reload data.
