What is the best way to remove the factory "rubber" grip without damaging?

I assume you're talking about the Hogue Bantam rubber grips. There is supposed to be a little plastic wedge that you push over the backstrap of the frame that spreads the grips apart and they let go of the gun. There are no screws or mounting hardware.
Two plastic butter knives work if that's all you've got.
I am scared of empty guns and keep mine loaded at all times. The family knows the guns are loaded and treats them with respect. Loaded guns cause few accidents; empty guns kill people every year. -Elmer Keith. 1961
