Pistol grip Mossberg 12 guage shotgun?
Hello everyone. I was wondering how is the Mossberg® 500® J.I.C.™ Cruiser 12 Gauge Shotgun? I wanted to get a shotgun at home, but was not really wanting a buttstock shotgun.

I'm sure it's fine for what it is, but, for me, I'd much rather have a standard stock, so I could aim the gun. Shotgun patterns don't really open up that much in typical home-defense distances.
If this fits your needs, though, Mossberg makes quality products, and this is probably one of them.

Trust me in this one I tried both and especially for HD keep the standard stock on it. Much more comfortable to shoot plus with a pistol grip you cannot get to the safety without taking your hand off the grip.

1)Treat firearms as if they are loaded. 2)Point the muzzle away from non-targets.
3)Keep fingers off the trigger until ready to shoot. 4)Be sure of your target and backstop.

Mossberg makes a good shotgun, but if you have never fired one of the pistol grip models you might want to borrow one and try it. They are not easy to be accurate with and you need to have a good grip on it. That type of pistol grip puts my hand/wrist at an odd angle and I don't care for it at all.
I took a youth model 20 gauge pump and had the barrel shortened to legal limits. Light weight and easy to use.
Thanks,
George

I have a "Persuader" Mossberg 500 with a pistol grip and regular stock. Fitted with the stock and after market 28" barrel it makes a nice gun for sporting clays. Zero problems. I put the 18" barrel back on the gun for home defense.

I have a Mossberg 500 Persuader/Cruiser combo (all that means is that it came with both a full stock and the pistol grip).
It is a handy, fantastic little shotgun with the stock. It is a slightly shorter, much less handy gun with the pistol grip. In addition, thanks to the safety placement on mossbergs, you CANNOT manipulate the safety effectively with a pistol grip unless you have 12 inch long fingers.
Short of a breaching only tool in house to hosue fighting that you want kept light and handy so it doesn't get in the way of a rifle, I can't think of a situation that a PGO shotgun would be a better tool than one with a stock.
If you absolutely HAVE to have one, do what I did and buy one that comes with both. Then you can throw on the pistol grip and quickly reach the same conclusion I did.

I took a Mossberg Maverick 88, converted the forearm to a Mossberg 500 version and added the Blackhawk specops Knoxx stock with the pistol grip. Now I have the grip, safety on the trigger guard for easy access, spring loaded stock and grip. Only down side is I cannot add an extended mag tube to the Maverical 88 but still works reall nice. I have a vent rib with truglow sights too. Works well.

As a side note, i recommend the full stock. Tactically, it can help you even if you are carrying in a waist position. A pistol grip stock is almost always fired from the hip position, which makes it hard to shoot accurately. If you have a full stock, you can put the butt along side your hip, lock your elbow against it, and keep the hand on the grip area. This help keep the shotgun aligned with where you think you are pointing and lets you adjust the aim by twisting your body.
IMO, it also makes the recoil MUCH easier to deal with than a pistol grip only does.
Having said that, I still know many people who like the pistol grip and can hit what they need to with it at typical combat distances. They also argue that it makes it easier to retain control of the gun by keeping it shorter overall.
I agree that you may prefer the pistol grip but should shoot one first to find out. As you might have guess from the above, I don't have one or I would offer to let you try mine. The lack of people on the board who think it is a good idea might be an indication also.

I have never been able to use a pistol grip. I just changed my Remington 870 to a tactical stock. It is just a shorter stock and I enjoy a lot.
Re: Pistol grip Mossberg 12 guage shotgun?
Pistol grip shotguns just "look" cool. They are not fun to shoot, not as accurate as needed, and honestly serve no purpose. I got one with a pistol grip and put a telescoping stock on it as soon as I shot it with a pistol grip.

If I was going to do a pistol grip only shotgun, a SBS 14" with that grip would be a LOT more appealing than an 18" gun with a 90 degree angled grip. Looks much more comfortable to shoot, and gives you a decent chance of being able to manipulate the safety.

I still don't think its as useful as a shotgun with a stock, but its better than nothing I guess.
