Interesting article ( to Kathy Jackson, aka "The Cornered Cat" for linking this to her FB page)
You ever wonder why there are so few African Americans at your pro-gun event? For many shooters in the black community gun ownership makes them a pariah. They deal with gun bigotry, cultural alienation and a lack of support. Let me illustrate one case with a guy named Phil and his family ...
Funny thing, racism. Not really. But it is alive and well in this country. It has infiltrated and permeated the black community. I qualified along side people of all types and I share range time with them as well. Not once has the color of someone's skin become an issue.
I like to keep this handy... for close encounters.
How terrible! I did not realize it was so bad for people out there. So sad for those that need it the most (women in inner cities) to be viscerally afraid of a tool that could save their lives.

That was an enjoyable read. I hope you all actually read the full text. It isn't long. What you should get out of it is that a lot of folks view gun ownership in political terms, and very narrowly at that. You don't have to be a tea party republican, a southern baptist, or red in the neck to feel the need to defend your constitutional rights. And it shouldn't be a crime to have honest disagreements in how the nation is run, as long as the discussion is civil.

My wife was at a women's business conference a while back and made the acquaintance of a black female CHL instructor. They had a great conversation about CCW. I also note that last night there was a local DFW news story on Fox 4 reported by Shaun Rabb in which a a couple of black churchgoers got robbed at gunpoint after leaving church in Oak Cliff. The man was the church pastor, and Rabb noted that he is also a CHL holder, but that he had left his firearm at home that day....or things might have turned out differently:
....worth noting....the bad guy used an "automatic pistol," which seems like a pretty sizable investment for a guy who is resorting to robbing donut money from church goers....

I can relate. How about a conservative observant Sunni Muslim who carries a concealed handgun?. Muslims friends would think I work for *** government agency. Others would think I have a malcious intent to carry. Catch 22?

One of my wife's best friends is falls into this group. A very nice, fun, happy go lucky, lovely black woman. She was having problems with a stalker and may still be, as he shows up after several months or years after no contact. My wife, a CHL holder, tries to get her to get a gun and her CHL to protect herself but every time the subject comes up her friend wrinkles her nose like someone farted and says, "Girl, no. I don't need a gun."
I have offered to teach her, take her to the range, help her find a gun, and even to pay for her CHL training through my club. She will have nothing to do with it. It has always boggles my mind, this article was enlightening.

How about this: a scholarship program that would fund in part or whole the cost of the class and perhaps a portion of the license fee for those women who would otherwise qualify legally to obtain a license but due to circumstances are unable to afford to do so? Folks need to pay something to have respect for the license and ownership in the process, but there are likely a lot of abused women with stalkers after them who might benefit. And if the low life knows she might be packing, well, he might go elsewhere....just a thought
