Remington 22 b.b. caps

Post by SecedeTX »

A lawyer friend called and asked if I could help with one of his deceased clients sisters. The sisters were cleaning out their dads closet, and came across "scary bullets" and were afraid to touch them.

I went over, and I found a box with about 1000 rounds of 22 long rifle 50 count boxes. The sisters just wanted them out of the house and said I could take them.

So once I got back to my house with the "scary bullets", I unpacked them and came across 1 box of Remington Kleanbore 22 B.B. caps 100 round count. They are .22 rim fire cartridges, but the casing is only about a third of the height of a .22 long rifle, and the projectile is rounded and shorter. The casings are also made of copper.

What were these things used for???

Was there special firearms for this round?

Never heard of BB caps, but CB caps I have heard of and frequently use. CB caps are .22 rimfire cartridges that have a very light load, actually only have priming compound in them if I remember right. You can shoot them in any gun chambered for .22 rimfire, but they will not cycle in semi-autos. I use them to shoot squirrels at very close range, 15 yards or less. They are very quite compared to regular .22 rimfires.

The .22 bb caps where originality invented as an indoor game invented by a French man to entertain his guest. in the old days they were used in shooting galleries
The BB Cap was the first type of rimfire ammunition. BB stands for "bullet breech." It was invented in France around 1845, designed for the Flobert indoor target rifle. BB Caps were designed for shooting gallery use and are seldom encountered these days, as shooting galleries are now considered politically incorrect by socialists, tort lawyers, girly men, and liberal politicians.

Did some online search.

"Our smallest .22, the BB Cap (for "bullet breech"), is essentially a Flobert round for indoor target shooting. BB Caps launch 16-grain bullets at 750 fps. Muzzle energy: 26 ft-lbs. Conical bullets replaced the original round ball before U.S. ammunition firms dropped this cartridge after World War II. They can drive through an inch of soft pine at close range. The .22 CB ("conical bullet") Cap, circa 1888, comprises a 29-grain .22 Short bullet in a BB Cap case with a pinch of black powder. "

So, These rounds predate the "CB" rounds, no telling how dated this ammo is.

It might be worth something to a collector. Or keep it yourself as a curio.

If you have a full box and the box is in good condition they may have some collector value.

I have the original box in good shape, but I will probably just keep it. It's quirky ;-)

I do have an 8 shot .22 revolver that I inherited (Sears and Roebuck brand) that can fire it. I may test a few rounds just for fun.
